GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum College women's lacrosse
team finished its 2015 Inaugural campaign with a 17-9 win over the
University of Virginia's College at Wise on Wednesday night at
Pioneer Field. Cheyenne Bray led TC with five points on four goals
and an assist.
Tusculum finishes the season with a 10-5 record and finished
third in the South Atlantic Conference. UVA Wise's record falls to
3-11.
Kelsey Crow and Erin Sims each had four points on a pair of
goals and an assist. Calyn Kelly also registered four points with
three goals and a helper, while Rachel Del Duca also scored three
goals. Savannah Elliott found the back of the cage twice while
Madison Malone had a goal and an assist. Lillian Lesniewski also
assisted on a goal.
The game opened with each team trading the first four goals as
the game stood tied at 2-2 nine minutes in. However, TC struck for
three-straight goals to take a 5-2 lead with 17 minutes remaining
in the first half.
The Cavaliers broke up the run with a score, but after Kelly
found the back of the cage UVA Wise's Morgan Goodbrod and Rachel
Cole scored the final two goals of the half as the Pioneers held a
6-4 advantage at the break.
After Rachel Cole cut the deficit to one with the first goal
of the second half, the Pioneers registered five-straight goals in
seven minutes to take a commanding 11-5 lead with 21:37 to play in
the game. Each team then registered back-to-back goals, but then
Stephanie Sintetas put a tally on the board to cut TC's lead to
13-8 with 10:58 to play.
Following the goal, the Pioneers put the game out of reach
with a four-goal outburst including a spectacular behind-the-back
goal from Malone as they took a 17-8 lead. Hannah Marshall scored
the game's final goal with 22 seconds remaining to make the final
tally 17-9.
Brooke Wagner and Kaitlin Winnie each spent time in the cage
for TC with Wagner earning the win with a pair of saves. Mel Reilly
made nine saves but was dealt the loss. Tusculum held a narrow
20-19 advantage in ground balls and out-shot the Cavaliers
29-18.
Marshall led UVA Wise with four points on three goals and an
assist while Goodbrod and Cole found the back of the cage once and
assisted on a score.
