GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Mackenzie Baker scored
five goals to lead the sixth-seeded Coker College Cobras to a 12-10
upset of third-seeded Tusculum College in the quarterfinals of the
2015 South Atlantic Conference tournament on Tuesday evening.
Madison Malone led the Pioneers (9-5) with three goals and an
assist.
Savannah Elliott, Erin Sims, and Cheyenne Bray each had a pair
of goals for TC, while SAC leading scorer Kelsey Crow was held to
just one. Claudia Jenkins, Lindsay Ordemann and Danielle Holcomb
each had two goals for Coker (9-7).
Tusculum jumped out to a quick 2-1 lead with back-to-back
goals from Elliott and Sims. However, Coker scored four answered
goals to take a 5-2 advantage with 18:25 to play in the first half.
Bray broke up the Cobra scoring with her first tally of the day,
but Coker responded with three-straight scores to take an 8-3 lead
with 6:32 before halftime.
Crow and Elliott had back-to-back goals for TC to cut the
deficit to 8-5. However, Jenkins scored the final goal of the half
as the Cobras took a 9-5 lead into the break. Mackenzie Baker
scored the first goal of the second half for Coker before Malone
and Bray both found the back of the cage to cut the Coker lead to
10-7 with just under 16 minutes remaining.
The Pioneers and Cobras traded the next two goals from Malone
and Jenkins as the score was 11-8 with 8:14 to play. Holcomb
answered with a goal to give Coker its four-goal advantage back at
12-8 with just 6:39 remaining. TC tried to mount a late comeback as
Malone and Sims scored in the final five minutes to cut the lead to
12-10. However, the Cobras won a late draw control and were able to
run out the clock to preserve the win.
TC outshot the Cobras 30-27 but Coker goalie Kaitlyn Vela made
12 saves in the winning effort. Brooke Wagner made six saves but
took the loss after surrendering 11 of the 12 goals. The Pioneers
also held a 28-21 advantage in ground balls with Calyn Kelly
picking up a game-high six.
Tusculum will wrap up the 2015 season next Wednesday, April
22, against the University of Virginia at Wise at 5 p.m. at Pioneer
Field. Coker advances to play second-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne University
in Friday's semifinal round in Charlotte, North Carolina.
