GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Queens University of
Charlotte wrapped up a perfect South Atlantic Conference Women's
lacrosse schedule with a 25-11 victory over Tusculum College
Saturday afternoon at Pioneer Field.
The 13th-ranked Royals (11-4, 8-0 SAC) received six goals from
Jena Ready and five goals each from Brittany Larranaga and Maggie
Masters to hand the Pioneers (9-4, 5-3 SAC) their first home-field
loss of the season. Abigail Paulus added a goal and five assists
for the Royals, who led 15-8 at halftime and added 10 second-half
goals for the victory.
Kelsey Crow paced the Pioneers with four goals and an assist,
with Savannah Elliot netting three goals and Erin Sims adding a
pair of tallies. Crow's four goals increased her SAC-leading total
to 51 for the season, while her 60 points are the fourth-best in
the conference. The Pioneers' 11 goals are the most for any SAC
team against the Royals this season.
Queens rolled out to a 6-0 lead just over nine minutes into
the game, as Masters had three goals and two assists during the
opening barrage for the Royals. Crow scored her first of the day
with 20:28 left in the first half to cut the deficit to 6-1, but
the Royals got goals from Larranaga, Kelly Dowd, Masters and Ready
to extend the margin to 10-1 at the halfway point of the
half.
Trailing 12-2 after a Sims goal was answered by goals from
Ready and Nicole Forgione, the Pioneers struck for four straight
goals in a span of 2 minutes, 10 seconds. Cheyenne Bray and Crow
each had a goal and an assist during the run, while Elliott and
Sims also scored to help the Pioneers pull within 12-6 with 7:26
left in the first half.
Two goals from Larranaga and one from Gabby Farina pushed the
Royals back ahead 15-6 with 1:58 left in the first half, but Crow
scored twice in the final 90 seconds to cap off a wild first half
and send the Pioneers to the break trailing 15-8.
In the second half, Masters and Malone traded goals before the
Royals ran off six consecutive goals, including three by Ready and
two from Dowd, to take a 22-9 lead with 11:09 left. Elliott scored
twice to reduce the Queens advantage to 22-11, but the Royals
finished the game with three goals in the final two minutes.
Queens held a 43-25 edge in shots over Tusculum and collected
24 ground balls to 13 by the Pioneers. The Royals had just eight
turnovers as a team while the Pioneers turned the ball over 14
times in the contest, though Tusculum did have a 20-18 advantage in
draw controls.
Malone finished with five ground balls and four draw controls
for the Pioneers to go along with a goal and an assist, while Bray
had a team-high five draw controls and Crow added four. For Queens,
Dowd led all players with seven draw controls, while Bridgette
Larranaga and Sydney Dishman shared the team high with four ground
balls.
Both teams used a pair of goalies in the contest, with Kaitlin
Winnie finishing with three saves and Brooke Wagner six for the
Pioneers. Danielle Horoschak had seven stops for the Royals, with
Cait Cavallaro making three saves in a relief role.
The Pioneers finished in a tie for third place in the league
in their inaugural season, and will host a SAC Tournament
quarterfinal game on Tuesday night, The game time and opponent will
be announced by the conference office later this weekend.
