GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The UNC Pembroke women's
golf team placed three players in the top-five as the Lady Braves
led wire-to-wire to win the 2013 Tusculum Fall Classic, held this
week at Link Hills Country Club.
UNCP wins its second TC Fall Classic title in the last three years
(2011, 2013) as the Lady Braves finished with 301-306=607, winning
by 13 shots over Lincoln Memorial and Converse, who tied for second
with 620. LMU was awarded the runner-up trophy on a playoff.
West Alabama finished fourth with 631, followed by North Greenville
(632), King (634), host Tusculum (640), Catawba (657), Mars Hill
(678), Lenoir-Rhyne (685) and Spartanburg Methodist (768).
Elizabeth Swallow of King University captured medalist honors with 147, including a one-under par 71 on Tuesday, winning by two shots over UNCP's Ashlii Thompson (73-76=149). Catawba's Madison Kennedy (79-72=151) and Lizzie Bundy of UNCP tied for third place with 78-73=151. UNCP's Laura Bird and Marley Felthousen of Converse tied for fifth place with 73-79=152. Bird earned the final spot on the All-Tournament Team in a playoff.
Tusculum senior Sara Howard tied for seventh place with 78-75=153, while junior teammate Alec Cunningham tied for 14th place with 81-75=156. TC sophomore Calley Lawson posted 81-81=162 to tie for 30th, while freshman Taylor Lambertsen finished 42nd with 85-85=170. The freshmen duo of Alex Valeri (85-83=168) and Lindsay Butler (93-89=182) placed 39th and 59th, respectively for the Pioneers.
In conjunction with the women's tournament that is held
simultaneously with the men's event, a combined championship is
awarded to the school with the lowest aggregate combined score by
its men and women's teams. Lincoln Memorial captured its third
straight combined championship as the LMU men and women finished
with 1172 for the lowest combined score in the eight-year history
of the tournament. Tusculum finished second with 1206, followed by
Catawba (1242), Mars Hill (1279), Lenoir-Rhyne (1289) and
Spartanburg Methodist (1388).
A rare feat happened at Link Hills on Tuesday as two players scored
a hole-in-one on the same hole. Converse freshman Ansley Vaughan
aced the par-3 third hole in the morning portion of the women's
tournament. Tre Mullins of the LMU men's team scored a hole-in-one
on No. 3 later in the day en route to capturing the men's
individual title by a single stroke.
Tusculum returns to action on Oct. 14-15 as the Pioneers compete at the State Farm Intercollegiate in Tazewell, Tenn.
