GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The UNC Pembroke women's golf team posted a score 301 to take the opening round lead at the 2013 Tusculum College Fall Classic. The two-day, 36-hole tournament is being held at the 5,805-yard, par-72 Link Hills Country Club.

The Lady Braves were led by the duo of Laura Bird and Ashlii Thompson as they fired a one-over par 73 and share the first round lead with Marley Felthousen of Converse College.

Converse is second with 307, while Lincoln Memorial is third with 310. West Alabama is fourth with 314, followed by King (319) and North Greenville (321). Tournament host and defending Classic champion Tusculum shot 324 and is tied for seventh place with Mars Hill. Catawba is ninth with 332, followed by Lenoir-Rhyne (334) and Spartanburg Methodist (392).

King's Cortnee Young and Alex Bruce of Converse are tied for fourth place with 75, while Elizabeth Swallow (King) and Christine Stryken (West Alabama) are tied for sixth with 76.

Tusculum senior Sara Howard fired a 78 and is tied for 14th place. TC junior Alec Cunningham and sophomore teammate Calley Lawson are tied for 28th place, while sophomore Kelly Horrell is 38th with 84. TC freshmen Taylor Lambertsen and Alex Valerie each shot 85 and are tied for 43rd. Valerie is competing as an individual competitor, as is TC freshman Lindsay Butler (93 - 58th).

In conjunction with the men's tournament that is held simultaneously with the men's event, a combined championship is awarded to the school with the lowest aggregate combined score by its men and women's teams. Lincoln Memorial has a 20-shot lead for the combined championship as the LMU men and women posted a 582. Tusculum is second with 602, followed by Mars Hill (622), Catawba (627), Lenoir-Rhyne (635) and Spartanburg Methodist (683).

The final round of the Tusculum Fall Classic will begin at 8:20 a.m. on Tuesday.
