Late rally falls just short as Pioneers take second at SAC Championship
SEVIERVILLE, Tenn. ---

Tusculum College made a pair of runs at leader Newberry College, but the defending champion Wolves prevailed by four shots to win the 2013 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Women's Golf Championship at the Sevierville Golf Club's Highlands Course on Tuesday.

The Pioneers trailed by six shots entering the final round, but took a brief one-shot lead on the front nine then drew even on the back nine with four holes to play before the Wolves pulled away to claim the crown. Newberry shot 325 on Tuesday and 962 overall in the three-day, 54-hole tournament to edge out the Pioneers, who carded 323 on Tuesday and 966 overall. Newberry's team score is the seventh-lowest in SAC Championship history, while the Pioneers total is good for ninth-best all-time.

Sophomore Emee Herbert, the SAC Player of the Year, claimed a spot on the All-Tournament first team after matching the best round of the day with a 76 in breezy conditions on the par-72 course. Her final score of 235 put her in sole possession of fourth place, three shots behind medalist Barbara Castro of Newberry.

Senior Jillian Corum, the first-round leader, came home with an 82 on Tuesday but grabbed a second-team All-Tournament spot with a total score of 238, placing her in seventh. Junior Sara Howard was the third Pioneer to earn All-Tournament status as she shot 80 in the final round and recorded a 54-hole total of 241, tied for ninth place.

Freshman Calley Lawson wrapped up her first SAC Championship with a final-round 85, putting her in a tie for 18th place with three other players. Sophomore Alec Cunningham was the fifth Pioneer to finish in the top half of the field, as she tied for 24th place at 258 after carding an 88 on Tuesday.

Joining Herbert and Newberry's Castro on the All-Tournament first team, Eline Askeland of Newberry and Whitney Ball of Lincoln Memorial, who tied for second at 233. Desta Coaker of LMU and Carson-Newman's Meredith Hawkins shared the final first team position of fifth with a score of 237.

Corum and Howard were part of the second team along with Lincoln Memorial's Brittany McCown, who was eighth at 240, and Newberry's Julia Daneshfar, who tied for ninth with Howard at 241.

Lincoln Memorial was third in the team standings at 970, four shots behind the Pioneers, and were followed in the top five by Carson-Newman (982) and Wingate (1009). The final four teams were Catawba (1029), Anderson (1052), Mars Hill (1143) and Brevard (1214).
