PINEHURST, N.C. --- The Tusculum College women's golf team fired an opening round 333 and is in 10th place following day one action of the inaugural Pinehurst Challenge at National Golf Club Monday.

Newberry, the No. 19 ranked team in the nation, was the only team with three players in the 70s on the cool and blustery day as the Wolves fired 312 and have a seven-shot lead over No. 22 Saint Leo (319), followed closely by No. 15 UNC Pembroke (320), Flagler (321), Carson-Newman (323), Pfeiffer (324), Barry (325), Armstrong Atlantic State (326), Florida Tech (331) and Tusculum to consist of the top 10.

Wingate, the host of this year's tournament, shot 337 and is 11th, while Catawba and Queens (N.C.) are tied for 12th with 338. Mount Olive is 14th with 341, followed by Lenoir-Rhyne (359), Coker (378), King (395) and Brevard (486).

Carson-Newman's Jessica Tarbet and Saint Leo's Jordan Hatch share the first round individual lead with two-over-par 74s. Newberry's Barbara Castro is third at 75. Fifteen golfers posted rounds in the 70s on Monday.

Tusculum's Aly Pugh is tied for 16th place after firing a first-round 80 on the Jack Nicklaus-designed course layout that is playing at 5,835 yards this week. Sara Howard is 27th following her 82, while Jillian Corum is tied for 36th place with 84. Emily Palenkas is 55th with her 87, while Katie Doane posted a 92 and is tied for 74th place. Haley Rye shot 89 and is tied for 67th, playing as an individual competitor.

The 18 teams and 90 individuals in the 2011 Pinehurst Challenge represent 16 states and 12 foreign countries.

The 2011 Pinehurst Challenge at National Golf Club concludes Tuesday with a shotgun start slated for 9 a.m.
