Tusculum in 11th place at Newberry Invitational

HILTON HEAD ISLAND, S.C. --- The Tusculum College women's golf team shot an opening 357 and is tied for 11th place after the first day of the Newberry College Invitational, during warm and windy conditions at the par-74, 5,808-yard Moss Creek Golf Course Monday.

Tusculum rookie Sara Howard is tied for 13th place after her first round 83. Jillian Corum is tied for 45th at 90, while Emily Palenkas carded 91 and is in 50th place. Katie Doane posted a 93 and is 51st, while Haley Rye is tied for 53rd with 95.

UNC Pembroke fired 316 to capture the first round lead, nine shots better than host Newberry (325). Barry is third with 332, followed by Flagler (335), Carson-Newman (336), Queens University of Charlotte (343), Armstrong Atlantic State (344), Wingate (350), Lincoln Memorial (351), Catawba (354), Tusculum and Montevallo (357).

UNC Pembroke's Katja Dammann leads the tournament after Monday's first round. Dammann shot a three-over par 77. UNCP has three golfers in the top six. The second round of the Newberry Invitational begins with a shotgun start at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning.
