Coe, Rollins lead at Tusculum/Kiawah Island Intercollegiate

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. --- Joanne Coe of Rollins College shot a three-under par 69, while the Tars posted a team score of 296 to take the first round lead at the 2011 Tusculum College/Kiawah Island Women's Golf Intercollegiate Saturday. The two-day, 36-hole tournament is being held at Cougar Point Golf Club.

Rollins, the 17th-ranked team in NCAA Division II, holds a nine-shot lead over No. 2 Florida Southern (305), while No. 15 UNC Pembroke is third at 307. No. 16 Barry is in fourth place with with 309, followed by Belmont Abbey (312), Savannah College of Art & Design (314), Armstrong Atlantic State (316), Lynn (322), Columbus State (324) and Lincoln Memorial (324) to round out the top 10. Mount Olive is 11th with 331, followed by Wingate (340), Anderson (343), Tusculum (345), Lenoir-Rhyne (345), Queens (346) and Coker (377).

Coe, who won this event in 2009, came within two shots of a tournament record and only shy of matching the four-under 68 she fired in her opening round two years ago. She holds a two-shot lead over Columbus State's Kimesha Anthony (71) and three shots over Elizbeth Over of Barry and Armstrong Atlantic State's Rebecca Goldman, who each posted rounds of 73. Four players are tied for fifth place with 74, including Melanie Audette (Florida Southern), Brianna Seo (Rollins), Valentina Urquiola (Mount Olive) and Emily Flanigan (Florida Southern).

Tusculum senior Emily Palenkas was the top Pioneer on the day as she posted an opening 79 and is tied for 27th place. Junior Katie Doane is tied for 50th place following her 84, while rookie Sara Howard is 59th with 87. Haley Rye added a 95 and is tied for 77th. Individual competitors Aly Pugh and Adriana Vizcarrondo shot 92 and 95, respectively for the Pioneers.

The final round will begin Sunday morning.
