Methodist wins by a shot to capture McAmis Memorial title

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Methodist University women's golf team held off a final round charge by two-time defending champion Belmont Abbey College to win the Agnes McAmis Memorial title by a single stroke Tuesday at Link Hills Country Club.

The Monarchs finished with a two-day tournament record 604 to edge Belmont Abbey by a shot 605. The Crusaders, who were looking to record their third straight McAmis Memorial title, made a valiant final round charge, shooting an 18-hole tournament record 296. The 296 was two shots better than the 298 posted by Methodist on Monday. The Monarchs, who are the 12-time defending NCAA Division III national champions, broke the previous 36-hole record of 606, posted by Belmont Abbey in 2008.

Methodist senior Susan Martin captured medalist honors with her four-under par 140, including a second round 69 (-3) to edge Wingate University individual competitor Ashley Denton, who finished runner-up with 71-70=141 (-3). Martin, the defending NCAA III national champion, came one shot shy of tying both an 18-hole and 36-hole record.

Catawba College's Kelsey Babos finished third with back-to-back rounds of 71-71=142 (-2), while Katie Thackerson of Lenoir-Rhyne University finished fifth with 147, including Tuesday's final round 70 (-2). Three players finished tied for fifth place at 148, including Carson-Newman College's Jessica Tarbet, Paige Caldwell of Methodist and Anderson University's Laura Buyers. Tarbet earned the fifth and final spot on the All-Tournament Team by virtue of a scorecard playoff.

Carson-Newman finished third with 611, while Anderson (615) and Queens University of Charlotte (619) finished fourth and fifth, respectively. Catawba posted consecutive scores of 317 to post 634 and finish sixth. Lincoln Memorial University shot 315 to place seventh, while host Tusculum College finished eight with 642.

Lenoir-Rhyne finished ninth with 655, followed by Concord University (655), Mars Hill College (670), Erskine College (677), Tiffin University (687), Limestone College (719) and King College (764).

Tusculum freshman Jillian Corum tied for 25th with 81-77=158. Included in her Tuesday 77, Corum eagled the par four, 12th-hole as she drove the green and knocked home a seven-foot putt for the eagle two. Junior Emily Palenkas tied for 77-82=159, while senior Mary Ann Vizcarrondo, playing in her final collegiate home tournament at Link Hills, tied for 34th place with 83-78=161. Katie Doane shot 81-85=166 to tie for 45th, while Adriana Vizcarrondo shot 85-83=168 to tie for 49th to round out the team scores. Playing as individual competitors, Aly Pugh (84-82=166) and Haley Rye (91-85=176) finished 45th and 71st respectively.

The Pioneers return to action next Monday as they compete in the South Atlantic Conference Golf Championship in Etowah, N.C.
