Tusculum finishes sixth at L-R/Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate

CALABASH, N.C. --- The Tusculum College women's golf team posted a final round 321 to finish with a two-day score of 650 to finish sixth at the Lenoir-Rhyne University/Myrtle Beach Intercollegiate, held this week at the Meadowlands Golf Club.

Tusculum senior Mary Ann Vizcarrondo tied for ninth place with 155 as she posted a second day 79. Rookie Jillian Corum tied with 27th as she shaved 10 shots of Monday's round to post 77 to finish with 164. Junior Emily Palenkas tied for 29th with 83-82=165, while sophomore Aly Pugh finished 33rd with 83-83=166. Sophomore Katie Doane tallied 88-83=171 to tie for 44th place to round out the scoring for the Pioneers.

Newberry College, the No. 12 ranked team in NCAA Division II, won the 13-team event with 611, including a final round 299. Newberry's Maria Luz Besio captured medalist honors with 77-72=149 to edge Catawba College's Kelsey Babos 79-71=150 by a single shot. Wingate University finished second with 624, while Lincoln Memorial University and UNC Pembroke tied for third with 630. Lenoir-Rhyne finished fifth with 646, followed by Tusculum, Queens University of Charlotte (652), Armstrong Atlantic State University (665), Catawba (665), Anderson University (669), Erskine College (687), Limestone College (738) and Mars Hill College (785).

Tusculum has wrapped up the fall portion of its 2009-2010 slate. The Pioneers return to action Feb. 6-7 when they host the Tusculum/Kiawah Island Intercollegiate at Kiawah Island, S.C.
