Pioneers in 12th to open Valpo Classic

DYER, Ind. --- The Tusculum University women's bowling team is 12th after the opening day of the 2022 Valpo Classic. The three-day, 17-team tournament is being held at Stardust Bowl III in Dyer, Indiana and hosted by Valparaiso University.

The Pioneers went 1-3 on the day while finishing with a total pinfall of 4,113 pins in their five Baker games.

Tusculum opened the day with a 930-907 win over Aurora, before dropping a 938-775 decision to Kentucky Wesleyan.  TU lost 855-772 to Upper Iowa and were edged 900-858 at the hands of Wright State. The Pioneers had a bye game to close out the day where TU finished with 778 pins.

No. 15 Maryville (Mo.) went 5-0 on the day and finished with 4,983 pins to take the first day lead. No. 18 Wisconsin-Whitewater is second with 4,920, followed by Lewis (4882), Marian (4545), No. 25 Newman (4540), Valparaiso (4492), Aurora (4376), Belmont Abbey (4309), Upper Iowa (4279), Kentucky Wesleyan (4272), Alabama A&M (4152), Tusculum (4113), Wright State (4079), North Central (4024), Elmhurst (4024), Carroll (3966) and Dominican (3865).

The Pioneers (2-13) will bowl five traditional games on Saturday and will face Elmhurst, North Central, Valparaiso, Dominican and close out against 15th-ranked Maryville (Mo.).

Following Saturday's action, the tournament will conclude on Sunday with a bracket playoff.
