Heather Jankowy scored a game-high 23 points and Anderson
University held off a late rally by Tusculum College to pick up a
75-67 victory in South Atlantic Conference Women's basketball
action Wednesday night at Pioneer Arena.
Alexis Dillard had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Trojans (12-9,
8-7 SAC), who held the Pioneers to 32.4 percent shooting in the
game while going 8-for-18 from three-point range as a team.
Kristen McMillion scored a career-high 19 points and had 15
rebounds for the Pioneers (4-15, 4-11 SAC) while Shynese Whitener
had 19 points and equaled her career best with nine rebounds, but
Tusculum fell behind by 19 points in the second half and could not
pull off its third straight comeback victory.
Lesley Woods drilled four three-pointers and had 12 points for
Anderson, which put four players in double figures despite shooting
40 percent (22-for-55) from the field in the game. Jasmine Franklin
also hit double figures for the Trojans with 11 points and five
rebounds off the bench.
McMillion's 19 points came on a perfect 6-for-6 performance from
the field and easily broke her previous career high of 13 points
set Dec. 14 at Catawba. McMillion's 15 rebounds gave her seven
consecutive games with double figures on the glass and produced the
sixth double-double of the year for the SAC leader in
rebounding.
Whitener, the Pioneers' leading scorer at 13.5 points per game
entering the contest, picked up two early fouls and played most of
the second half with four fouls. Despite the foul trouble, Whitener
went 6-for-13 from the field and 7-for-8 from the line to reach
double figures for the seventh straight game, while her nine
rebounds equaled her season and career high set on Nov. 20 at
Carson-Newman.
Anderson raced out to an 11-4 lead following back-to-back
three-pointers from Woods, only to see the Pioneers fight back and
take a 15-13 lead on a basket by Whitener with 10:38 left in the
first half. Tusculum led 18-15 with 8:55 to go in the half on a
basket by Maelyn Cutshaw, but Anderson responded with an 8-1 run
capped by two free throws from Dillard that gave the Trojans a
23-19 lead with 5:53 left in the half.
The Trojans led 33-26 at the half as Dillard led all players with
12 points to go with five rebounds and two blocked shots. Anderson
shot 34.6 percent (9-for-26) from the field in the half, but hit
12-of-15 foul shots. Whitener paced the Pioneers with 10 points
while McMillion had nine points and six rebounds, but Tusculum shot
25.9 percent (7-for-27) from the floor as a team.
Anderson reached a double-digit lead for the first time at 41-31 on
two free throws by Dillard with 15:44 to go, then used a 7-0 run to
go on top 49-33 with 12:26 left. A Jankowy layup with 5:35
remaining gave the Trojans their largest lead of the game at 64-45,
but the Pioneers answered with an 11-1 run to cut the Anderson lead
to 65-56 with 2:37 remaining. Tusculum would get within six at
73-67 with 16 seconds to go, but Jankowy sank two foul shots with
13 seconds left to close out the scoring.
Tusculum finished the game with a 49-41 advantage in rebounding
over Anderson, including 22 on the offensive glass. The Pioneers
also had 10 steals in the game, marking the eighth time in the last
10 games that Tusculum has reached double figures in steals.
Blakeley Burleson and Nequoiah Anderson both just missed reaching
double figures for the Pioneers, finishing with nine points apiece.
Burleson also had seven rebounds while Anderson had five rebounds
and three assists while playing all 40 minutes.
Tusculum will return to action on Saturday when it hosts Catawba at
2 p.m. at Pioneer Arena for the annual "Play4Kay" game. Tusculum
players, coaches and support staff will be wearing pink on game day
to promote awareness of the disease. Half of all gate proceeds at
Saturday's game will be donated to the Kay Yow/WBCA Cancer
Fund.
