Shelby Wolfe recorded game highs of 23 points and 12 rebounds as
Brevard College romped to a 91-68 victory over Tusculum College in
a South Atlantic Conference Women's basketball game Wednesday night
at Boshamer Gymnasium.
Hadara Bannister added 19 points for the Tornados (3-8, 2-5 SAC),
who came into the game averaging just 55 points a game but nearly
reached that total with a 50-point first half against the Pioneers
(1-10, 1-6 SAC).
Brevard shot 45 percent (27-for-60) from the field including
7-for-17 from three-point range, and connected on 30 free throws in
42 attempts as a team. Meanwhile, Tusculum finished at 34.4 percent
from the field (21-for-61) and was 22-for-32 from the foul line in
the game.
Blakeley Burleson led the Pioneers and matched her career high with
18 points, while Nequoiah Anderson added 11 points and Shynese
Whitener had 10 points and five assists. Four players fouled out of
the game for the Pioneers, who were called for 30 fouls as a
team.
The Tornados opened the game with a 15-3 run and closed the first
half with a 10-0 spurt to go to the locker room with a 50-30 lead.
Brevard led by as many as 28 points in the second half en route to
a sweep of the season series with Tusculum.
Bannister recorded 14 points in the first half and Wolfe added 13
for Brevard, while Maelyn Cutshaw had a team-high eight points in
16 minutes off the bench for Tusculum in the opening half. The
Tornados shot 50 percent (17-for-34) from the field in the half
while limiting the Pioneers to 31 percent (9-for-29) from the field
as a team.
In the second half, Tusculum could get no closer than 17 points at
70-53 following a three-point play from Burleson with 10:59 left.
Burleson scored 14 of her 18 points in the second half, helping the
Pioneers shoot 37.5 percent from the field in the half.
Madison Lenox also reached double figures for Brevard with 15
points to go along with six assists and three rebounds. Taylor
Hiatt and Katie Williams had nine points apiece for the Tornados,
who received 75 points from their starters.
Cutshaw was one of three players to score nine points for the
Pioneers, joining Jessica Hairston and Brianna Mitchell. Mitchell
also had seven rebounds and four assists while Hairston grabbed six
rebounds in 22 minutes off the bench. Kristen McMillion, who
entered the game as the SAC leader in rebounding at 9.5 per game,
battled foul trouble all night but still finished with eight boards
in 24 minutes before fouling out late in the second half.
The Pioneers will be back in action Saturday at Lenoir-Rhyne, with
tipoff scheduled for 4 p.m. from Shuford Memorial Gymnasium.
