Eighth-ranked Clayton State University received 20 points, eight
rebounds and seven blocked shots from Shacamra Jackson in an 89-61
victory over Tusculum College in Women's basketball at the Loch
Shop Classic Saturday afternoon.
Kiana Morton scored a game-high 21 points and added eight rebounds
off the bench for the Lakers (3-1), who forced the Pioneers (0-6)
into 30 turnovers and converted the miscues into 33 points.
Shynese Whitener led Tusculum with 16 points and seven assists
while Elise Coberly tallied 12 points and six rebounds, but the
Pioneers shot 33.9 percent (20-for-59) while allowing the Lakers to
connect on 45.8 percent (38-for-83) from the field.
Yishica Sims also reached double figures for the Lakers with 18
points to go with four rebounds and four steals, and Bena Hanyard
tallied 12 points, seven rebounds and three steals. As a team,
Clayton State made 18 steals in the game and blocked 10 Tusculum
shots.
Blakeley Burleson also reached double figures for Tusculum,
finishing with 10 points, while Kristen McMillion and Jessica
Hairston shared the team lead in rebounds with eight apiece. As a
team, Tusculum narrowly dropped the rebounding battle with Clayton
State by a margin of 46-45.
Clayton State jumped to a quick 7-0 lead on a three-point play by
Kayla Price and back-to-back buckets from Sims. A three-point play
by Sims pushed the Lakers into double figures for the first time at
14-4 with seven minutes gone in the first half, and the margin grew
to as high as 23 points before the teams went to halftime with
Clayton State on top 42-22.
Sims had a game-high 13 points in the first half on 6-for-11
shooting for the Lakers, while Nequoiah Anderson led the way for
Tusculum with seven points and Whitener added six. The Lakers shot
46.3 percent (19-for-41) from the field while holding the Pioneers
to 30.8 percent (8-for-26) and forcing 19 turnovers.
Clayton State took its biggest lead of the day at 87-50 on a layup
by Morton with 3:16 left, and Tusculum closed the game on an 11-2
run to set the final score. The Pioneers increased their shooting
to 36.4 percent (12-for-33) in the second half, and went 4-for-9
from three-point range as a team.
Tusculum, whose first six opponents have a combined record of 23-9,
will return to action next Saturday, Dec. 7 with a South Atlantic
Conference game at Queens beginning at 2 p.m.
