April McCann scored 15 points and grabbed a career-high 18 rebounds and Tusculum College held Catawba College without a field goal in overtime on its way to a 53-47 victory in the Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament quarterfinals at Goodman Gym on Wednesday night.

Breaira Barksdale added 15 points, five rebounds, five assists and a career-high six steals for the sixth-seeded Pioneers (15-12), who advance to the SAC semifinals for the seventh time in the last eight years. Tusculum will face second-seeded Lenoir-Rhyne on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. from Timmons Arena in Greenville, S.C. for the right to advance to Sunday's championship game.

Chloe Bully scored a game-high 17 points for the third-seeded Indians (16-11), who swept the season series from the Pioneers but shot 28.8 percent (19-for-66) from the field as a team. Catawba attempted just three free throws in the game and was outrebounded by Tusculum by a 59-43 margin.

McCann, who recorded her fifth double-double of the season and seventh of her career, shattered her career high of 12 rebounds set five previous times. She also matched her season high with four assists and played in a career-high 41 of the 45 minutes in the game.

Kendal Baxter also reached double figures for the Pioneers with 10 points, including a key three-pointer with just under a minute left in overtime that gave Tusculum a 52-47 lead. Kristen McMillion played 33 minutes off the bench and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds for the Pioneers, and hit two free throws that gave Tusculum the lead for good with 2:44 remaining in overtime.

The Pioneers matched Catawba by shooting 28.8 percent from the field (21-for-73), but Tusculum had 22 offensive rebounds which it turned into 16 points. In the overtime, the Pioneer defense took over as the Indians missed all eight of their field-goal attempts in the five-minute period.

Tusculum led most of the night, taking its biggest lead of the game at 38-29 on a layup by Barksdale with 11:17 left. However, Catawba went on a 10-0 run over the next four minutes, capped by a Bully three-pointer that put the Indians on top 39-38 with 7:35 to go.

The teams traded the lead over the next five minutes, with the Pioneers tying the score at 45-45 on a basket by Ashley Thurman with exactly two minutes left. Neither team was able to score for the remainder of regulation, as Catawba went 0-for-4 from the field and Tusculum was 0-for-3. Bully had a chance to win the game for the Indians, but her shot at the end of regulation was off the mark.

Barksdale gave the Pioneers a 47-45 lead on a layup on the first possession of overtime, but two free throws from Quaneasia Coleman evened the score at 47-47 with 3:53 to go. After a sequence that saw the Pioneers get three offensive rebounds, McMillion connected on two free throws with 2:44 to go in overtime to give Tusculum the lead for good at 49-47.

After three missed shots from the Indians, Baxter sank a long three-pointer with 58 seconds to go to push the Pioneer advantage to 52-47. Barksdale extended the margin to six on a free throw with 31 seconds left, and Catawba missed a pair of three-pointers in the final seconds to close the contest.

Tusculum led for most of the first half and carried a slim 20-19 lead into halftime. McCann led the Pioneers with six points and six rebounds in the first half while Baxter and Barksdale had five points apiece. Elizabeth Merritt paced the Indians with seven points and five boards in the opening half.

Antoinette McPhail scored just four points in 43 minutes for the Indians, but had eight rebounds and six blocked shots. Coleman tallied four points and a team-high 11 rebounds before fouling out in the closing seconds of overtime, and Merritt had nine points and seven boards.

The win was the fourth straight for Tusculum over Catawba in the SAC Tournament quarterfinals, with the other wins coming in 2006, 2007 and 2010. The Pioneers are seeking their fifth trip to the conference championship game in the last six years and their third title in the last four years, after winning in both 2010 and 2011.

Lenoir-Rhyne (19-8) advanced to the semifinals with a 59-57 victory over Wingate on Wednesday night. The teams split the season series, with each winning on their home court.

In the other semifinal on Saturday, top-seeded Anderson will play fourth-seeded Newberry at noon preceding the Tusculum game against Lenoir-Rhyne. The winners will meet Sunday at 1:30 p.m. from Timmons Arena for the SAC championship and an automatic bid to the NCAA Division II Tournament.
