Jasmine Gunn repeats as SAC Player of the Year

ROCK HILL, S.C. --- Tusculum College senior guard Jasmine Gunn has been named the South Atlantic Conference Women's Basketball Player of the Year for the second consecutive season, the SAC office announced Friday.

Gunn was also named first-team All-SAC for the fourth consecutive season, while senior center Catherine Hintz was recognized as a second-team choice. Voting was conducted by the conference's 10 head coaches.

The 4-11 Gunn (Nashville, Tenn.) is the fourth player in SAC history to be named Player of the Year in back-to-back years, and the sixth player to win multiple Player of the Year awards. She led the SAC in scoring average during the regular season at 19.8 points per game (12th in Division II) and ranked fourth in assists at 3.35 per contest. She scored 20 or more points 15 times this season, including three 30-point performances, and was a three-time SAC Player of the Week.

Gunn is also among the SAC leaders in field-goal percentage (14th, 44.7 percent), steals (9th, 1.77 per game), assist to turnover ratio (8th, 0.93 ratio), free-throw percentage (13th, 78.0 percent) and minutes played (tied for 4th, 33.46 minutes per game).

On February 5, Gunn became the fifth player in SAC history and second player in program history to score 2,000 career points. She currently ranks fourth all-time in the SAC with 2,133 points, fifth with 615 assists and fifth with 266 steals. Gunn is also the SAC career leader in free throws made (648) and attempted (825), and is tied for the SAC career lead in games started with 122.

Gunn was the preseason National Player of the Year as selected by the Women's Division II Bulletin, and was the NCAA Southeast Region MVP in 2010 after leading the Pioneers to the regional championship. She has posted 10 double-doubles in her career and owns the only triple-double in recorded program history.

Hintz (Hastings, Minn.) averaged 11.5 points, 8.2 rebounds and 1.5 blocked shots per game in 23 games (five starts), averaging just 18.4 minutes per contest. She ranks third in the SAC in field-goal percentage (54.7 percent), third in rebounding and third in blocked shots, while her scoring average is good for 15th in the league.

She scored in double figures 14 times in 18 conference games, including a career-high 32 points in the regular-season finale at Mars Hill on February 26. Hintz posted six double-doubles and was a two-time SAC Player of the Week.

In three seasons at Tusculum, the 6-8 Hintz has scored 701 points (8.1 per game) and pulled 541 rebounds (6.2 per game) while ranking fifth in program history with 101 blocked shots. Her career field-goal percentage of 55.3 percent is second-best in program history, while her 541 rebounds rank eighth.

The Pioneers also claimed several SAC statistical championships. In addition to Gunn's league-leading scoring average, junior forward Staci Hicks led the SAC in field-goal percentage at 55.8 percent (77-for-138). As a team, the Pioneers led the SAC in scoring defense (60.1 points per game).

Joining Gunn on the first team were Mandy Mendenhall of Carson-Newman, Dana Hicks of Catawba, Cameron Sealey of Lenoir-Rhyne, Brittini Young of Mars Hill, Helen McKinney of Newberry and Kurie Washington of Wingate.
