HICKORY, N.C. --- Game times have been set for the 2009
NCAA Division II Southeast Women's Basketball Regional, hosted by
Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, N.C. this weekend. Tusculum
College, the No. 2 seed in this year's regional, will square off
against seventh-seeded Lander University at 1 p.m. this Friday at
Shuford Memorial Gym.
Tusculum is making its second consecutive appearance in the NCAA
Tournament, having earned the No. 2 seed in last year's South
Atlantic Regional. The Pioneers engaged in a tight battle with
seventh-seeded Lander in which the Bearcats upset Tusculum 83-78 to
advance to the semifinal round.
Friday's game marks the sixth recorded meeting between Tusculum and
the Bearcats. Lander leads the all-time series 4-1 and has won the
last four contests; including last season's upset in the
regional.
Tusculum (25-5) is in the midst of one of the best campaigns in
program history, and is one win shy of tying the school record for
most victories in a season as a member of the NCAA Division II. The
Pioneers have won eight of their last 10 games to capture their
second straight South Atlantic Conference championship and finish
runner-up at last weekend's Food Lion South Atlantic Conference
Tournament. Tusculum fell to Lenoir-Rhyne 66-57 in Sunday's
championship game and has posted the program's second straight
20-win season.
Lander (20-10) has won five of its last six games en route to
capturing its second straight Peach Belt Conference Tournament
title, as the Bearcats defeated USC Aiken 64-53 in the championship
game on Sunday.
The winner of the Tusculum/Lander game will face either Clayton
State University or Carson-Newman College in Saturday's semifinal
round at 6 p.m.
Tickets for all three days will be $7.00 per day for adults and
$5.00 per day for children 12 and under and students with a valid
college ID. Children under the age of two will be admitted for
free.
