Pioneer men take first, women second at John-Hunter Classic

COLUMBIA, S.C. --- The Tusculum University men's track & field team took the team championship at the John-Hunter Classic, hosted by Columbia International University.

The Pioneer women finished second behind the host Rams in the 2024 outdoor opener for Tusculum, which saw Adrian Gumm set two men's throwing school records on Saturday and Theresa Green-White establish a new school mark in the women's 100 hurdles.

Tusculum will compete at the Montreat Open on Friday and Saturday, March 22-23 in Black Mountain, North Carolina.

MEN'S RECAP
The Pioneers had seven event wins on Saturday and amassed 222 points at the meet, finishing ahead of runner-up Millgan (148 points) and the host Rams (91 points).

Gumm set school records in the shot put and the discus, winning the shot with a throw of 15.14 meters (49 feet, 8 1/4 inches) which broke his own school record of 14.73 meters (48 feet, 4 inches) set at the 2023 SAC Championship. Gumm took third in the discus at 42.19 meters (138 feet, 5 inches), breaking the record of 40.81 meters (133 feet, 11 inches) set by Michael Peppin at the Lenoir-Rhyne Classic on April 6, 2019.

Senior Marquel Pittman won the 100 meters with a time of 10.63 seconds, with freshman Lansford Cunningham in second at 10.87 seconds and junior Stephen Brewer fourth at 11.02 seconds.

In the 400 meters, grad student Zack nelson won with a time of 48.38 seconds, the eighth-fastest time in school history, with senior Dorian Craven taking third at 49.16 seconds. Grad student Antonio Aparicio won the 800 meters at 1:55.97.

In hurdles, sophomore Daryl Smith Jr. won the 400 hurdles at 55.94 seconds, with senior Jamal Cash in second at 56.75 seconds. Cash was second in the 110 hurdles at 15.05 seconds, the fifth-fastest time in school history, while freshman Hunter Burkey took third at 16.67 seconds.

Freshman Pau Valdepenas was fourth in the 1500 meters at 4:01.53, the fifth-best time in school history, while freshman Sam Shipp took seventh at 4:05.54.

Tusculum swept the relays as the 4x100 team of Cunningham, Pittman, Nelson and sophomore Isaiah Olson ran 40.80 seconds and the 4x400 relay of Nelson, Craven, Cunningham and Pittman won with a time of 3:16.08.

Smith added a second victory in the long jump with a mark of 6.56 meters (21 feet, 6 1/4 inches) with junior Joshua Stephens in fourth at 6.16 meters.

Freshman Dylan Horne was fourth in both the shot put (14.11 meters/46 feet, 3 1/2 inches) and the discus (40.33 meters/132 feet, 3 inches) and sophomore Gavin Rowell was fifth in each, throwing 13.07 meters (42 feet, 10 3/4 inches) in the shot and 39.52 meters (129 feet, 8 inches) in the discus.

WOMEN'S RECAP
Green-White ran 14.00 seconds in the 100 hurdles to break her own school record of 14.24 seconds set at the 2023 SAC Championship. She also added a second-place in the 400 hurdles at 1:09.08.

Senior Judy Chellah won the 800 meters with a time of 2:24.14, with freshman Caley Sosnowski taking second place at 2:24.90. Junior Jada Martin was third in the 400 meters at 1:00.21.

In the 100 meters, sophomore Kiera Taylor placed second with a time of 12.15 seconds, followed by freshman Alonda Shelton in fourth at 12.32 seconds. Taylor's time was tied for the eighth-fastest in program history.

The Pioneers won the 4x400 relay as the group of Chellah, Martin, Sosnowski and freshman Macey Snapp ran 4:09.87. Tusculum was second in the 4x100 relay as Taylor, Shelton, Green-White and freshman Kieley Smith were clocked in 47.12 seconds.

Smith took third in the long jump with a mark of 4.80 meters (15 feet, 9 inches) and junior Amber Hogan was sixth in the shot put at 9.84 meters (32 feet, 3 1/2 inches).

Columbia International had 210 points to win the women's team title, with Tusculum second at 116 points and Milligan third with 107 out of the 11 teams that recorded at least one point.
