Yates sets second school record of weekend at VMI Invitational

LEXINGTON, Va. --- The Tusculum University men's and women's indoor track & field teams competed on the second and final day of the VMI Invitational on Saturday at the Corps Physical Training Center.

Sophomore Isaiah Olson won the men's 60 meters for the Pioneers, while freshman A'jaylah Yates set a school record for the second consecutive day for Tusculum. The Pioneers had 12 individual top-10 performances during the Saturday portion of the meet.

Tusculum will make the return trip to VMI next Friday and Saturday as the Pioneers compete at the VMI Winter Relays.

MEN'S RECAP
Olson ran a career-best 6.92 seconds in the finals of the 60 meters to earn the victory, with senior Marquel Pittman in fourth place at 6.94 seconds and senior Tyrell Edwards sixth in 6.94 seconds. Olson's time moved him into eighth place on the program all-time performance list in the event.

The Pioneers' 4x400 relay of grad student Zack Nelson, senior Dorian Craven, junior Stephen Brewer and Pittman placed second in 3:17.06, the second-fastest time in program history.

In the finals of the 60 hurdles, senior Jamal Cash ran 8.71 seconds and took eighth place. Pittman placed 10th overall in the 200 meters at 22.21 seconds.

In field events, sophomore Daryl Smith Jr. placed second in the triple jump with a mark of 14.86 meters (48 feet, 9 inches) with junior Joshua Stephens taking third place with a career-best mark of 14.35 meters (47 feet, 1 inches).

Sophomore Adrian Gumm took seventh place in the shot put at 14.49 meters (47 feet, 6 1/2 inches), his second-best mark of the season and third-best of his career.

WOMEN'S RECAP
Yates, who set a school record with an NCAA qualifying time of 7.62 seconds in the semifinals of the 60 meters on Friday, followed up on Saturday by breaking the school record in the 200 meters with a fourth-place finish in 25.28 seconds. She broke the record of 25.36 seconds set by I'Keriah Day at the USC Open on Feb. 16, 2019.

Yates turned in a third-place finish in the 60 meter finals with a time of 7.67 seconds, while sophomore Kiera Taylor was fifth overall at 7.79 seconds. Sophomore Theresa Green-White qualified for the finals in the 60 hurdles and finished in fourth place with a time of 8.96 seconds.

Sophomore Inmaculada Delgado finished 17th in the mile at 5:33.29 and took 23rd in the 3000 meters with a career-best time of 11:10.62.
