Pioneers sweep 100 meters in record fashion at Catamount Classic

CULLOWHEE, N.C. --- The Tusculum University men's and women's track and field teams were in action Saturday on the second day of the Catamount Classic, hosted by Western Carolina University.

Tusculum's men finished fourth overall with 75 points, with a victory and school record from junior Jordan Taylor in the 100 meters and a win by the 4x100-meter relay. The Pioneer women finished 10th out of 12 teams with 31 points, paced by freshman Kiera Taylor who also broke a school record in winning the 100 meters.

The Pioneers will be back in action on Saturday, April 22 in the one-day LR Bears Invitational at Lenoir-Rhyne University in Hickory, North Carolina.

MEN'S RECAP
Jordan Taylor ran a wind-aided 10.30 seconds in the finals to break the school record of 10.31 seconds set by All-American Widchard Guervil at the Gamecock Invitational on Apr. 13, 2019. Taylor also ran the leadoff leg in the 4x100 relay that won in a time of 40.29 seconds, a group that included senior Jarvis Barber Jr., senior Marquel Pittman and freshman Isaiah Olson.

Pittman was third in the 100 finals at 10.45 seconds, tying his career best and fifth-fastest in program history, while Barber was fourth at 10.51 seconds. Barber and Pittman also ran in the 4x400 relay that took third at 3:15.17, along with senior Antonio Aparicio and sophomore Stephen Brewer.

Aparicio broke his own school record and finished fourth overall in the 800 meters with a time of 1:52.78, bettering his mark of 1:54.26 he set at last year's Catamount Classic.

Junior Jamal Cash took second in the 110 hurdles finals in a season-best time of 15.30 seconds, and was fourth in the 400 hurdles at 56.78 seconds. Freshman Daryl Smith Jr. took ninth in the 400 hurdles at 58.44 seconds.

Junior Dorian Craven had the ninth-best time in program history and finished fifth in the 400 meters at 49.16 seconds, with Brewer taking 10th place in 50.23 seconds.

In the triple jump, Smith was fifth at 13.76 meters (45 feet, 1 3/4 inches) with Joshua Stephens taking ninth place at 13.15 meters (43 feet, 1 3/4 inches).

The Pioneers scored in field events as freshman Gavin Rowell took seventh in the discus with a season-best throw of 39.51 meters (129 feet, 7 inches), while freshman Adrian Gumm was sixth in the shot put at 14.35 meters (47 feet, 1 inch) with the third-best throw in program history. Rowell was ninth in the shot put at 13.48 meters (44 feet, 2 3/4 inches) which ranks eighth on the program Top 10 list.

Host Western Carolina won the meet with 174 points, followed by ETSU in second place with 104 points and UNC Asheville with 103 points in third place.

WOMEN'S RECAP
Kiera Taylor, who was the top seed in the finals after running 12.11 seconds in Friday's prelims, was clocked at 11.81 seconds in the finals to earn the victory and break the school record of 11.90 seconds set by Faith Bostick at the 2021 South Atlantic Conference Championship.

Taylor was also part of two relays that earned points for the Pioneers, including the 4x100 relay of senior Aliyah Adderley, Taylor, freshman Theresa Green-White and sophomore Silvia Bah that was fourth in 47.87 seconds to just miss the school record of 47.81 seconds set at Montreat on March 25. The 4x400 relay of Green-White, Taylor, junior Emily Coddington and Bah was sixth at 4:03.75 with the sixth-best time in program history.

Adderley was seventh in the 100 finals with a career-best time of 12.13 seconds, while Green-White took seventh in the 100 hurdles finals at 14.92 seconds. In the 800 meters, freshman Inmaculada Delgado moved into fourth place on the Tusculum performance list with her time of 2:28.00.

In field events, sophomore Amber Hogan posted the second-best throw of her career and sixth-best in program history with a mark of 29.85 meters (97 feet, 11 inches).

Western Carolina beat out Wofford by 4 1/2 points to win the meet with 136.5 points, with the Terriers in second with 132 points and ETSU in third at 94 points. UNC Asheville finished fourth with 72 points, with Citadel in fifth at 65 points.
