Thirteen qualify for finals on day 1 of SAC Championship

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. --- Tusculum University advanced a total of 13 runners to finals on day one of the South Atlantic Conference Indoor Track & Field Championship at the JDL Fast Track on Saturday.

Eight runners moved out of preliminaries on the men's side and five on the women's side and will seek gold on the final day of the meet, which begins Sunday morning at 9 a.m.

The Tusculum men did not score in any of the five events completed on Saturday, with 12 events to be decided on Sunday. The Pioneer women will also be looking for their first points on Sunday, with six events completed and 11 remaining.

MEN'S RECAP
Seven different Pioneers advanced to Sunday's finals across five different events, led by senior Zackary Nelson who qualified fifth in the 200 meters at 22.17 seconds and second in the 400 meters at 49.42 seconds. Joining Nelson in the 400 finals is junior Dorian Craven, who qualified fourth with a time of 49.95 seconds.

Tusculum advances three to the finals in the 60 meters, as senior Marquel Pittman was third in 6.80 seconds, junior Tyrell Edwards was fifth in 6.83 seconds and senior Jordan Taylor placed seventh in 6.85 seconds. Junior Jamal Cash qualified sixth for the 60 hurdles finals with a season-best time of 8.51 seconds, and senior Antonio Aparicio earned a berth in the finals of the 800 meters as he placed third in prelims at 1:56.92.

Other top performances came from freshman Isaiah Olson, who had a season-best time of 6.96 and was 13th in the 60 meters. Edwards was ninth in the 200 meters but moved into ninth place on the Tusculum performance list in the event with a time of 22.48 seconds. Sophomore Stephen Brewer also just missed a spot in finals in the 400 meters, placing ninth in 50.99 seconds.

In the weight throw, freshman Mikeal Pillar was Tusculum's top finisher with a 15th-place throw of 13.68 meters (44 feet, 10 3/4 inches) which was a season best and the second-best throw in program history.

WOMEN'S RECAP
Freshman Theresa Green-White advanced to the finals in three events, finishing sixth in the 60 meters at 7.75 seconds and eighth in the 200 meters at 25.82 seconds for the second-best time in program history in each event. Green-White also qualified seventh for the 60 hurdles finals with a time of 9.23 seconds.

Freshman Kiera Taylor qualified for the finals in the 60 meters with a season-best time of 7.79 seconds, while junior Emily Coddington was fifth in the preliminaries in the mile with a career-best time of 5:14.29.

Grad student Kylia Wright was 11th in both the 60 meters and 200 meters, running 7.84 seconds in the 60 and 26.18 in the 200. In the weight throw, sophomore Amber Hogan had the second-best throw of her career and tied for 11th overall at 13.60 meters (44 feet, 7 1/2 inches).
