Sixth-place finish for Pioneer men at Flames Invitational

CLEVELAND, Tenn. --- The Tusculum University men's and women's track and field teams competed Saturday on the final day of the Flames Invitational, hosted by Lee University.

The Tusculum men finished sixth among the 34 teams that scored at the meet, while the Pioneer women were 21st overall among 30 scoring teams. The Pioneers had five scoring men's performances on Saturday, while the women earned points in a pair of events.

The Pioneers will be back in action on Friday and Saturday, April 15 and 16 at the Catamount Classic, hosted by Western Carolina University in Cullowhee, North Carolina.

MEN'S RECAP
Tusculum had four top-10 finishers in the 100 meters, led by Gerard Hearst who took third overall with a career-best time of 10.74 seconds. Jarvis Barber Jr. took fourth at 10.76 seconds, while Marquel Pittman was seventh at 10.82 seconds. Devan Hart was the fourth Pioneer to run the best time of his Tusculum career as he was 10th overall at 10.91 seconds.

In the 400 meters, Zackary Nelson placed fourth at 48.60 seconds, the third-fastest time in program history. Antonio Aparicio turned in the third-best time of his career in the 800 meters at 1:56.87, and Kyler Hodges was clocked at 9:57.59 in the steeplechase.

The 4x400 relay of Stephen Brewer, Barber, Nelson and David Saruni ran 3:20.88 to finish fourth overall and break the school record of 3:25.08 set at the Montreat Invitational on March 26.

Alabama Huntsville finished first in the team standings with 111 points, a half-point ahead of runner-up Lee. Carson-Newman was third with 70 points, followed by Hillsdale (44 points), Findlay (43) and Tusculum (35).

WOMEN'S RECAP
Javiera Ortiz set the program record in the 10,000 meters, crossing the line in 38:51.14 to break the previous mark of 40:07.01 set by Alissa Furches at the 2019 SAC Championship. Ortiz took nearly a minute and a half off her previous time of 40:14.92 set at Montreat two weeks earlier.

Shanee Angol finished second in the javelin, with a top throw of 40.57 meters (133 feet, 1 inch), while Amber Hogan was ninth in the shot put at 10.16 meters (33 feet, 4 inches).

In the 100 meters, Kenisha Stubbs moved into fifth place on the program performance list with a time of 13.16 seconds, while Destiny Lottie took over seventh place on the performance list in the 400 meters with a time of 1:02.11.

Lee captured the team title with 108 points, followed by Hillsdale at 95 points, Findlay in third with 71 points, Alabama Huntsville fourth with 53.5 points and Anderson in fifth with 43 points.
