Danielle Swygert hit a walk-off grand slam in game one and drove
home the go-ahead run in game two to lead Anderson University to a
sweep of their South Atlantic Conference softball doubleheader with
Tusculum College on Tuesday afternoon. The Trojans (27-9, 7-5 SAC)
won the opener 6-3 and took the nightcap 4-2.
The Pioneers (20-20, 6-6 SAC) return to the road Saturday at 1 p.m.
with a SAC doubleheader at Newberry.
Game 1: Anderson 6, Tusculum 3
(Box Score)
The Pioneers grabbed a 3-1 lead in the top of the seventh
on a two-run home run by Nicole Ball, only to see the Trojans
string together four singles to pull within 3-2. With the bases
loaded and one out, Swygert pulled a grand slam down the line in
right to cap the five-run rally and give Anderson the win.
The comeback spoiled a fine performance from Tusculum starter Kelly
King (13-9), who had held the potent Anderson lineup to one run on
five hits through the first six innings. King finished the game
with five strikeouts and no walks, marking the fourth straight
start that she has not issued a base on balls.
Anderson starter Katelyn Howser (9-4) took a no-hitter and a 1-0
lead into the top of the sixth inning before giving up the
no-hitter, shutout and lead to Paige Sneed, who went deep with her
third home run of the year to tie the game at 1-1. Howser finished
the game with four strikeouts and two walks for the Trojans.
Neither team had a hit until Jessica Neidigh delivered a single
with one out in the third inning, and King had to pitch out of a
second-and-third jam by retiring SAC home run leaders Molly Child
and Abby Child on infield grounders.
In the fourth, the Trojans threatened again as Swygert and Courtney
Czentnar led off the inning with back-to-back singles. After a
sacrifice, King escaped further trouble by getting two more ground
ball outs to keep the game scoreless.
Anderson finally broke through in the fifth as Neidigh singled with
one out, stole second and scored on a two-out single by Abby Child
to give the Trojans what turned out to be a brief 1-0 lead.
After Sneed's homer tied the game in the sixth, Tusculum grabbed
the lead in the seventh as Tavi Parris walked with one out and
scored on Ball's third home run of the year which gave the Pioneers
a 3-1 lead. However, the Trojans loaded the bases on singles in the
bottom of the seventh, and Abby Child singled to cut the margin to
3-2 ahead of Swygert's game-ending slam.
Swygert, Abby Child and Neidigh each went 2-for-4 with a run scored
in game one for the Trojans, while Kaytlin Stroinski was the lone
Pioneer to reach base safely more than once, on a walk in the
fourth and a single in the sixth.
Game 2: Anderson 4, Tusculum 2
(Box
Score)
The Trojans amassed 11 hits and erased a 2-1 deficit with a run in
the fourth and two in the fifth to finish off the sweep of the
Pioneers. Molly Child went 3-for-3 with a run scored and an RBI as
eight of the nine batters in the Anderson lineup had at least one
hit.
Tusculum's lone runs came in the top of the fourth inning when
Stroinski hit her fourth home run of the season, a two-run shot
that wiped out a 1-0 Anderson lead. However, Trojan starter Lauren
Rudesheim (13-4) was in control from there as she scattered four
hits and struck out five for the victory.
Anderson took a 1-0 lead in the third against Tusculum starter
Eliza Davis as Neidigh reached on a bunt single and later scored on
a sacrifice fly by Molly Child, but the Pioneers responded in the
fourth as Carolyn Williamson reached on an infield single and
scored on Stroinskis opposite-field home run for a 2-1 Tusculum
lead.
The Trojans tied the game in the bottom of the fourth on an RBI
triple by Bri Cason, and took the lead with two in the fifth on RBI
singles by Swygert and Laura Jansky. The Pioneers threatened in the
sixth as they loaded the bases on a single by Miranda Beeler, a
fielding error and a walk to Ball, but Rudesheim got a ground-ball
out to keep the lead at 4-2.
Brooke Rhodes reached safely twice for the Pioneers in the game as
she was hit by two pitches from Rudesheim. Sneed had the other hit
for the Pioneers with a single in the fifth inning.
Davis (3-7) gave up four runs (three earned) on eight hits in
four-plus innings for the Pioneers, striking out one and walking
two. Rachel Medley pitched the final two innings for Tusculum,
allowing three hits and no runs while fanning one.
