King's fourth straight win highlights split with Lander

King's fourth straight win highlights split with Lander
GREENWOOD, S.C. ---

Tusculum's Kelly King threw a six-hitter in game one for her third shutout in four starts, and Lander's Taylor Crawford tossed a no-hitter with 10 strikeouts in game two as the Pioneers and Bearcats split a non-conference softball doubleheader Tuesday at Doug Spears Field. Tusculum won the opener 1-0 while Lander captured the nightcap by a 3-0 score.

The Pioneers (8-8) are on the road Saturday at Limestone in a makeup of a doubleheader postponed by rain on Feb. 15. The Bearcats (3-11) travel to the Mid-South Classic in Spartanburg, S.C. for four games on Saturday and Sunday.

Game 1: Tusculum 1, Lander 0
(Box Score)

King (6-4) scattered six hits and struck out three for her fourth shutout of the season, and the Pioneers scored the game's only run on a ground ball in the sixth inning to grab the opener of the doubleheader from the Bearcats.

King allowed hits in each of the first four innings, then set down 10 batters in a row before giving up back-to-back hits with one out in the seventh. However, she retired the side on a foul popup and a ground ball to third base to give the Pioneers their fifth consecutive victory.

The Pioneers mustered just four hits off Lander starter M.K. Pegram (0-4), who matched King zero for zero on the scoreboard until Carolyn Wiliamson led off the sixth with a double. After a sacrifice bunt by Miranda Beeler, Tavi Parris reached first on an error as Williamson crossed the plate with the only run of the game.

Nikki Montesanti led the Bearcats at the plate by going 2-for-3 with a pair of singles, while Melanie Davis was 1-for-2 with a walk and two stolen bases. Pegram allowed two hits and struck out three in six innings for Lander.

Game 2: Lander 3, Tusculum 0
(Box Score)

Crawford (2-4) was effectively wild for the Bearcats in her no-hitter, as the Pioneers set a program single-game record with five batters hit by pitch. Crawford also walked four batters but worked out of trouble in the second and third by recording two of her 10 strikeouts to end the Tusculum threats.

Aubrey Lamar hit a solo home run in the fourth inning to give Lander the lead for good, and Destiny Clyde delivered a two-run double in the fifth off hard-luck loser Rachel Medley (2-3), who yielded three runs on seven hits in six innings for Tusculum.

The Pioneers had the first scoring chance in the top of the second inning, loading the bases with one out as Kaytlin Stroinski and Katie Brennan were hit by pitches and Nicole Ball drew a walk. However, Crawford delivered back-to-back strikeouts to keep the game scoreless.

In the third, Parris was hit by a pitch with two outs and Stroinski followed with a walk, but again Crawford got out of trouble with a strikeout. Tusculum also put a runner on base in the fourth, but a popup to first base was turned into a double play to end the frame.

Lamar's third home run of the season with one out in the fourth gave the Bearcats a 1-0 lead, and the lead grew to 3-0 in the fifth as singles by Addy Schelble and Arielle Buchholz preceded a two-out double from Clyde.

The Pioneers got a leadoff baserunner in the sixth when Stroinski was hit by a pitch, but were unable to advance her. Williamson walked with two outs in the seventh to keep the game alive, but Crawford got her 10th and final strikeout to complete her gem.

Clyde and Reychel Webster each went 2-for-3 at the plate for the Bearcats, who did not walk or strike out in the game against Medley. Tusculum's defense stopped a pair of Lander rallies by converting ground balls into double plays in the first and sixth.
