A four-run first inning and a three-run sixth helped propel
Tusculum College to a 9-4 victory over East Stroudsburg University
Sunday afternoon at Red Edmonds Field.
Miranda Beeler went 3-for-4 with two runs batted in and Kaytlin
Stroinski and Katie Brennan each knocked in a pair of runs for the
Pioneers (7-7), who picked up their fourth straight win and
improved to 6-0 at home this season.
Kelly King (5-4) allowed one earned run and struck out two for her
third straight win for the Pioneers, who supported her by scoring
in four of the six innings in which they batted.
Tusculum jumped to a 4-0 lead after one inning, then added a run in
the fifth and three more in the sixth after the Warriors (1-4) had
cut the deficit to 5-4 in the fourth. The Pioneers had nine hits in
the game, including two doubles from Stroinski and a triple from
Courtney Hutcherson, and stole four bases without being caught.
The Pioneers opened the scoring in the first against Warrior
starter Amanda Carlin as Carolyn Williamson was hit by a pitch and
Beeler reached on a bunt single. After a sacrifice by Tavi Parris,
Stroinski knocked in both runs with a double to shallow left field
that gave the Pioneers an early 2-0 lead. An error on a grounder by
Brennan allowed Stroinski to score the third run, and Hutcherson
drove home Brennan with a triple to the fence in right-center for a
4-0 advantage.
East Stroudsburg got a run on the board in the third on a two-out
RBI double by Sierra Wagner, and took advantage of a two-out error
in the fourth to tack on three runs on a bases-loaded double by
Kasey Meckes.
After leaving runners at second and third in the fourth, the
Pioneers stretched their lead to 6-4 in the fifth as Stroinski led
off with a double, went to third on a sacrifice by Robin Stoner and
scored on a groundout by Brennan.
The Pioneers put the game away with three runs in the sixth. Nicole
Ball led off with an infield single and moved to third when a bunt
by Alix Kruel was thrown away. Williamson then laid down a bunt to
third that allowed Ball to score, and Beeler drove two runs home
with a bloop single to right-center.
Wagner went 2-for-4 with an RBI for the Warriors, while Cara McNeil
was 2-for-2 with a double and a sacrifice and Kacie Killeen went
2-for-3 with a run scored. Carlin (0-1) allowed four runs (two
earned) on three hits in 2/3 of an inning, and was followed by
Rachael Liguori who surrendered two runs on four hits in 3 1/2
innings and Laura Suits, who gave up three runs (two earned) over
the final 1 2/3 innings.
The Pioneers will be on the road Tuesday for a non-conference
doubleheader at Lander starting at 4 p.m.
