Taylor MacDonald earns SAC Softball honors

ROCK HILL, S.C. --- Tusculum College second baseman Taylor MacDonald has been named to the 2011 All-South Atlantic Conference Softball Second Team announced league officials Tuesday. The team is selected by a vote of the conference's 10 softball coaches.

MacDonald, a 5-3 senior from Scarborough, Ontario, Canada, has helped lead the Pioneers to a 30-15 record, the most wins for the program as a NCAA II member (since 1999).

She is second on the team in batting average (.324) in her 45 starts this season. MacDonald leads the Pioneers with 46 hits and is second with 10 doubles and three triples.

Tusculum finished the SAC campaign with an 11-7 worksheet to tie for fourth place in the conference standings. The Pioneers have defeated three nationally ranked teams this season, including No. 2 North Georgia, No. 4 Alabama-Huntsville and No. 13 California (Pa.). The win over North Georgia extended Tusculum's 14-game winning streak, while TC's victory over Alabama-Huntsville is the only loss the top-ranked Chargers have suffered this season.

MacDonald is a member of the SAC Commissioner's Honor Roll, Athletic Director's Honor Roll, Dean's List and Charles Oliver Gray Honors List.

Tusculum sophomore pitcher Elizabeth Johnson was the SAC Statistical Champion for earned run average, posting the best ERA in the league at 1.17. Johnson, a 5-8 right-hander from Greenville, Wis., posted a 16-4 record, including the program's first-ever perfect game against Virginia-Wise earlier this season.

Sophomore shortstop Lindsey Umberger was also the SAC Statistical co-champion in triples per game, averaging 0.14 per contest. The 5-9 Madison, Wis. product has posted six triples this year, while also hitting .275 in her 44 starts.

Tusculum is the No. 4 seed in this week's Food Lion SAC Tournament, which is being hosted by Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City and Morristown. The Pioneers will take on fifth-seeded Wingate University in the tournament's opening game on Wednesday at 9 a.m. from the C-N campus.
