Powell clubs three-run shot, Pioneers rally to split twin-bill with Brevard

BREVARD, N.C. --- Phlyscia Powell launched a three-run home run in game two to propel the Tusculum College softball team to a doubleheader split against Brevard College in South Atlantic Conference play on Wednesday afternoon. Brevard won game one by a 9-0 score in five innings before the Pioneers rallied to a 4-1 victory in the night cap.

Brevard (14-15, 3-3 SAC) out-hit the Pioneers (8-14, 2-6 SAC) by a 17-14 margin on the afternoon, including a 10-4 advantage in game one. Savannah Ewing went 4-for-5 in the twin-bill to lead the Pioneers, while Taylor MacDonald and Powell added three and two base knocks, respectively. Powell also drove in a team-high three runs.

Holli Cadenhead (5-6) made the start in game one, pitching the first two and two-thirds innings before being relieved by Ashley Wilson. Erin Searcy (3-6) got the nod in game two, allowing one run on seven hits in seven innings of work.

Becca Curlee led the Tornados with three doubles and five RBI, recording four hits in five at-bats. Kristina Clayton, Chelsea Mallory, Brittany Jones, Maddie Fletcher, and Ncole Heusel each chipped in two hits, as Jones, Heusel and Kayla Dorsey each drove in at least one run.

Brevard opened the scoring with five runs in the first, including a two-run single by Jones, to take an early 5-0 lead. The Tornados added four runs in the third to equal the final margin of 9-0.

The Tornados got on the board first in the second inning, plating the game's first run on an RBI double by Curlee that gave Brevard an early 1-0 lead. Tusculum answered with three runs in the fifth, taking a 3-1 lead on Powell's three-run shot to right center. The Pioneers added a run on an RBI double by Kristin Cantrell in the sixth to equal the final margin of 4-1.

Tusculum returns to the diamond on Thursday when the Pioneers host North Greenville University in a 2 p.m. doubleheader at Red Edmonds Field.
