GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- The Tusculum College softball
walked off with a 2-1 win in game one of a South Atlantic
Conference doubleheader with Newberry College to split the
twin-bill and clinch a spot in next week's Food Lion SAC
Tournament. Tusculum is now 13-29 overall and 4-12 in SAC play
while Newberry moves to 27-15 overall and 8-6 in league action with
its 7-0 win in the nightcap.Eight Pioneers recorded a hit in the twin-bill, as Makenzie Loy and Racheal Wilburn each drove in a run in game one for TC. Loy and Taylor MacDonald scored Tusculum's two runs in game one.
Holli Cadenhead (8-16) got the start in game one for the Pioneers and allowed one unearned run on four hits to pick up the win. Ali Hansen (2-8) pitched the first two innings of game two before Cadenhead entered in relief. Cadenhead threw the final five frames of the nightcap, allowing one run and striking out three.
Kat Hammond led the way for Newberry in the twin-bill, picking up four hits in seven at-bats while driving in three runs. Amanda Huckestein went 3-for-4 in game two with two RBIs to lead Newberry to the doubleheader split.
Kristen Hicks (10-10) made the start in game one for Newberry, pitching the first six and one-thirds innings and allowing two runs. Huckestein (17-4) came into the game with one out and two runners on base before the Pioneers recorded the walk-off win on an error with the bases-loaded. Huckestein got the nod in game two for Newberry and fired a five-hit shutout, striking out four batters and allowing two walks in seven innings of work.
Game One: Tusculum 2, Newberry 1
Newberry opened an early 1-0 lead in game one on Hammond's RBI single in the first inning which scored Aissa Gatewood from second. Tusculum knotted the score at 1-1 in the bottom of the second when Wilburn a two-out RBI single to left field that allowed Loy to score from second to tie the game.
The Pioneers then recorded their third walk-off win of the season when the Newberry shortstop bobbled a ball hit by Loy with the bases loaded, allowing MacDonald to scamper home from third for the victory.
Game Two: Newberry 7, Tusculum 0
Newberry plated two runners in the first inning, and stretched the lead to 6-0 with four runs in the second to open a comfortable margin for Huckestein. The junior right-hander took a no-hitter into the fifth inning before Loy dropped a lead-off single into center field to break up the no-hit bid. The Pioneers put runners in scoring position in each of the next two innings but Huckestein was able to bear down and preserve the shutout.
Tusculum returns to the diamond on Tuesday when the Pioneers host Montreat College (19-19) at Red Edmonds Field. The Pioneers will honor their seniors prior to first pitch at 2 p.m.
