SALISBURY, N.C. --- The Catawba College softball team
posted a pair of shutouts en route to a doubleheader sweep of
Tusculum College in South Atlantic Conference play on Friday
afternoon at Whitley Field. The Catawba Indians won by the scores
of 2-0 and 7-0 to improve to 20-16 overall and 7-5 in the SAC. The
Pioneers fell to 12-26 and 3-9.Alex Kimbrell, Tasha Morrell, Racheal Wilburn and Savannah Ewing each had one hit for Tusculum on the day. Junior Holli Cadenhead (7-15) kept the Pioneers within striking distance in the opener, allowing two runs and striking out four in six innings. Ali Hansen (2-6) made the start in game two for the Pioneers and threw the first three frames. Cadenhead pitched a perfect inning in relief of Hansen before play was halted by rain.
Catawba starters Chelsea Wallace (8-2) and Meghan Cobb (5-6) held the Pioneers to a total of four hits in the twin-bill, including Wallace's one-hitter in game one. The freshman pitcher posted four strikeouts in seven innings of work, while Cobb struck out three batters in five innings in the nightcap.
Alli Justice led the way for the Lady Indians in the doubleheader, driving in five runs and clubbing a home run while collecting three hits. Ryann Baker went 3-for-4 with a home run and two RBIs in the twin-bill for Catawba.
Game One: Catawba 2, Tusculum 0
Wallace allowed a total of four base runners in game one on a single, a walk, and two hit by pitches. The Pioneers threatened to score with a pair of one-out base runners in the third before Wallace retired the final two batters of the inning, and sat down 14 of the last 16 hitters she faced to notch the shutout. The Catawba offense provided Wallace with a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings on RBI base knocks by Justice and Baker.
Game Two: Catawba 7, Tusculum 0
Tusculum opened game two with back-to-back singles by Kimbrell and Ewing in the first inning, but was unable to capitalize as the Catawba Indians threw out Kimbrell at second and retired the final two batters of the frame to stymie the Pioneers' early scoring threat.
Catawba opened the scoring in the second on a sacrifice fly by Callie Gordy that scored Cassie Markham. The Catawba Indians broke the game open with six runs in the third inning, getting a lead-off home run by Baker and capped the frame on Justice's one-out grand slam to left which gave Catawba a 7-0 lead heading into the fourth. Cobb took control from there, allowing one base runner over the next two innings before play was halted by rain.
Tusculum returns to the diamond on Tuesday when the Pioneers host King College (Tenn.) in a non-conference doubleheader at Red Edmonds Field. First pitch is scheduled for 4 p.m.
