NEWBERRY EDGES TUSCULUM 2-1 IN SAC SOFTBALL OPENER, GAME TWO WASHED OUT

NEWBERRY, S.C. --- The Newberry College Lady Indians held off a late rally to defeat the Tusculum College Pioneers, 2-1, in South Atlantic Conference softball action Saturday. The day was originally scheduled to be a doubleheader, but bad weather moved in just as the Lady Indians took a 1-0 lead with two outs in the bottom of the first. The game will be resumed on March 30.

Newberry moves to 15-10 overall and 1-0 in SAC action, while Tusculum falls to 6-11 and 0-1 in league play.

Game One: Newberry 2, Tusculum 1

Katelin Edwards (7-7) was perfect through four innings, struck out 10 batters and walked none to lead the Lady Indians to a 2-1 win over Tusculum.

Newberry pounded out 10 hits in the game, but stranded eight runners on base. The Lady Indians got on the board first when a single by Chelsea Chipoletti turned into three bases on a two base error by the left fielder. Chipoletti scored on an illegal pitch by Tusculum pitcher Megan DuBois (1-2), who suffered the loss after allowing two runs in five innings of work.

The Lady Indians left the bases loaded in the first and fourth innings but scored a clutch run in the bottom of the sixth when a single by Amy Jarrell drove home Ashley Marine to give NC a 2-1 lead.

Going into the top of the seventh, the Pioneers had managed only one hit, but a pair of singles up the middle and key errors by the Lady Indians pushed across a run on Jess Greer's single. However, with runners on the corners and two outs, Edwards struck out Kristina Neal to end the game.

Game Two: Suspended

Newberry pushed across a run on a Sara Powell double followed by a two-bagger by Jesse Groves with two outs in the bottom of the first. The fence in left center was damaged when the centerfielder collided with it in an attempt to catch the ball, and the storms rolled in as the fence was being repaired. The game is slated to resume on Sunday, March 30.

Tusculum returns to action on Tuesday when the Pioneers host Seton Hill University for a doubleheader beginning at 2 p.m. at Red Edmonds Field.
