Pioneer win streak ends with 6-1 loss at Wingate

WINGATE, N.C. --- In a matchup of the lone unbeaten teams in South Atlantic Conference play, 24th-ranked Wingate University defeated 29th-ranked Tusculum University 6-1 in men's tennis Saturday afternoon at the WU Tennis Complex.

The Bulldogs (11-5, 9-0 SAC) swept doubles from the Pioneers, then won five of the six singles matches to take sole possession of first place in the SAC. The Pioneers (14-4, 7-1 SAC) had their 11-match winning streak come to an end with the loss.

Wingate won doubles from Tusculum by losing a total of five games, with two of the victories coming from pairs ranked in the top 30 in Division II.

In singles, Tusculum's lone win came at flight two as Anton Krondell rallied for a 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 victory over Carlo Rosellini. Two of Wingate's five singles wins came in three sets, with Gabriel Constantino beating Nemanja Subanovic 6-1, 3-6, 6-2 at flight one and Luka Brown defeating Rens Verhaar 6-2, 1-6, 6-2 at flight five.

The Pioneers will return home to host 49th-ranked Carson-Newman on Monday at 1 p.m. at the Nichols Tennis Complex. The Eagles are fourth in the SAC at 6-2 and have an 8-5 overall record, and have been idle since a 5-2 loss to Wingate on March 30.
