Pioneers earn 6-1 win over Bluefield State

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum University won the first four points to clinch the match and went on to earn a 6-1 victory over Bluefield State University in non-conference men's tennis action Wednesday afternoon at the Nichols Tennis Complex.

The Pioneers (5-3) swept doubles from the Big Blues (0-2) and earned four of their five singles victories in straight sets to pick up their second win in as many days.

In doubles, Nemanja Subanovic and Marco Jalalian teamed up for a 6-0 sweep over Juan De Freitas and Luis Agullo at flight one, while Rhodri Atkinson and Will Gee beat Fabian Avila-Torres and Merlin Mazalto 6-2 at flight two. At flight three, Kenta Kondou and Nathan Matsuguma beat Teddy Razafindratsima and Jose Marquez by a 6-3 score.

In singles play, Kondou defeated De Freitas 6-1, 6-1 at flight three and Ivan Ivars won 6-2, 6-2 at flight six over Fernando Arguello. Atkinson clinched the match with a 6-2, 7-5 victory over Razafindratsima at flight one, ahead of the lone win for the Big Blues at flight four. Tusculum closed the match as Matsuguma beat Marquez 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 at flight five and Subanovic outlasted Agullo 2-6, 6-3, 6-1 at flight two.

Tusculum will return to the court on Friday, March 3 at Anderson beginning at 2 p.m. The Trojans were ranked 22nd in the latest ITA Division II poll.
