Pioneers defeat Mars Hill 6-1 to open SAC play

MARS HILL, N.C. --- Tusculum University picked up a 6-1 victory over Mars Hill University in South Atlantic Conference men's tennis action on Tuesday. The match was started Monday but was halted after doubles play due to rain.

The Pioneers (4-3, 1-0 SAC) won the doubles point and the first five singles matches to claim the victory over the Lions (2-6, 0-1 SAC).

In doubles play, Rhodri Atkinson and Will Gee earned a 6-3 victory at flight two over Faris Hadzisadikovic and Eliot Deknuydt at flight two, and Nemanja Subanovic teamed with Marco Jalalian for a 7-5 victory at flight one over Jose Roa and Diego Lopez.

Tusculum went ahead 3-0 in singles as Gee beat Gustaf Nilsson 6-2, 6-1 at flight five and Kenta Kondou beat Road 6-2, 6-1 at flight three. Atkinson clinched the win for the Pioneers by beating Deknuydt 6-1, 7-6 (7-3) at flight one.

In other matches, Jalalian shut out Collin Maides 8-0 at flight six, and Subanovic collected a 6-2, 6-4 victory at flight two over Lopez. Mars Hill's lone point came in a tiebreaker at flight four.

The Pioneers will wrap up February with a home match against Bluefield State on Wednesday, Feb. 22 at 2 p.m. at the Nichols Tennis Complex.
