GREENSBORO, N.C. --- The 32nd-ranked Tusculum University men's tennis team defeated Catawba College 6-1 in their South Atlantic Conference regular-season finale Saturday afternoon at Barber Park.
The Pioneers (13-5, 7-3 SAC) will be the fourth seed in the SAC Championship tournament and will host Anderson in a quarterfinal match on Monday at 2 p.m. at the Nichols Tennis Complex. The winners of the quarterfinals will play in semifinals matches on Thursday, with the championship match on Friday.
Tusculum won the doubles point from Catawba, then the Pioneers took five of six singles matches from the Indians (10-10, 3-7), who are the eighth seed in the SAC Championship tournament and will play their quarterfinal match at Wingate on Monday.
In doubles action, the team of Manuel Almeida and Tomas Almeida beat Jack Joel and Adam Rocko 6-2 at flight two, and Yago Fernandez and Tim Klee were 6-1 winners at flight three over Darius Perkins and Vid Rados.
In singles, Tomas Almeida won 6-4, 6-2 over Luca Picci at flight one and Fernandez defeated Joel 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 at flight three. Straight-set wins came from Manuel Almeida, who beat Rocko 6-4, 6-0 at flight four, Vadzim Raitsou who won 6-0, 6-0 over Perkins at flight five and Gabriel Yaguar who was a 6-1, 6-3 winner over Rados at flight six.
