TEMPE, Ariz. --- Two members of the Tusculum University men's tennis team were listed in the latest Oracle/Intercollegiate Tennis Association singles rankings, the ITA announced Wednesday.
Sophomore David Akinpetide is ranked 36th in singles and junior Yago Fernandez is ranked 73rd by the ITA for the Pioneers, who slipped out of the team rankings following a loss to Newberry on Saturday.
Akinpetide began the week with a 3-4 record in singles, with three of his losses coming to opponents ranked in the top 10. Fernandez has won five straight matches and started the week with a 6-3 singles record for the Pioneers.
Tusculum was 8-3 overall and 3-1 in the South Atlantic Conference to start the week, which features matches against three ranked opponents. The Pioneers were able to win their first match this week, defeating 16th-ranked Queens 4-3 on Wednesday for the highest-ranked opponent ever defeated in program history.
The Pioneers will visit 37th-ranked Lenoir-Rhyne on Friday at 1:30 p.m. before hosting 34th-ranked Bluefield State in a non-conference match on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Nichols Tennis Complex.
