Tusculum shuts out Virginia-Wise 9-0

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum College defeated the University of Virginia's College at Wise 9-0 in non-conference men's tennis action Saturday afternoon at the Nichols Tennis Complex.

The Pioneers (2-0) did not drop a set in the victory over the Cavaliers (1-1) in the team's final dual match of the fall portion of their schedule.

In doubles, Tashique Kader and Yago Fernandez teamed for an 8-2 victory at flight one over Andrii Rutnytskyi and Viktor Tunnikov, while David Siegle and Fabian Paier beat Josh McFadden and Chris Armistead 8-1 at flight two. Tusculum won the third flight by default as Eduardo Munoz and Toby de Klerk did not have an opponent.

In singles, Kader won at flight one after Rutnytskyi retired after losing the first two games. Fernandez posted a 6-2, 6-2 victory at flight two over Tunnikov, and Munoz downed McFadden 6-1, 6-2 at flight three. At flight four, Gabriel Bernardi bested Armistead 8-4 in a pro set, while Steven Knowles was a 6-2, 6-1 winner at flight five over Noah Aldridge. Siegle won by default at flight six after UVa-Wise was unable to field an opponent.

The Pioneers will travel to Lawrenceville, Georgia next weekend for the three-day Grizzly Open, hosted by perennial NAIA power Georgia Gwinnett College.
