WISE, Va. --- The Tusculum College men's
tennis team won its 2015 fall opener by a 9-0 sweep of UVa-Wise on
Monday afternoon in Wise, Virginia. No Pioneer singles competitor
or doubles team dropped more than two games per set in the winning
effort.
TC (1-0) was led by Jonas Winkelmann who defeated Andrii
Rutnytskyi (6-2, 6-1) in the top singles flight. Leon Seiz cruised
past Oleg Kopychenko 6-0, 6-0 in the second spot. The Cavaliers'
(0-1) Viktor Tunnikov took four games from Tashique Kader in the
third position but fell by a 6-2, 6-2 score.
Freshman Fabian Paier made his Tusculum debut and defeated
Noah Aldridge 6-0, 6-0 in the fourth flight while Toby De Klerk
defeated Blake Pientka by the same score at number five. Freshman
Eduardo Munoz also made his collegiate debut and beat Charles
Pollard 6-2, 6-0 in the sixth position.
Winkelmann and Seiz defeated Rutnytskyi and Viktor (8-2) in
the top doubles flight. Kader and Paier were victorious over
Kopychenko and Pientka (8-0) in the second spot while David Siegle
and De Klerk also won by an 8-0 sweep in the fourth spot over
Aldridge and Pollard.
The win was the first for Tusculum interim head coach Ted
Hensley who took over for Tommy Arnett who retired after a 14-year
stint at TC and 486 career wins.
The Pioneers will be back in action next Saturday in
Harrogate, Tennessee at the Lincoln Memorial Fall
Invitational.
