ROCK HILL, S.C. --- Tusculum senior Lukas
Winkelmann has been named the South Atlantic Conference Men's
Tennis Player of the Week, announced today by the league office. It
is his first SAC weekly honor this season, and the third in his
career.
Winkelmann was a perfect 4-0 in the top singles and doubles
flights last week to help keep the Pioneers undefeated this season
with a 9-0 record. Winkelmann, ranked 12th in the latest ITA
national singles rankings, began his week with an easy 6-1, 6-3
victory over Jody Sambrick Jr of Millersville.
The Bobligen, Germany native only dropped one game to John
Paul Jones of Bloomsburg (6-1, 6-0), before closing out the
Pioneers' Hilton Head, S.C., swing with another easy victory over
Ian Hinkamper of Quincy (6-2, 6-4). He finished the week with his
second SAC win of the season, a hard fought 7-6, 7-5 triumph of
Lenoir-Rhyne's Marvin Mueller. Winkelmann is currently riding a
41-match regular-season singles winning streak dating back to the
2012-13 season.
On the doubles side, Winkelmann teamed with his brother Jonas
in the top doubles flight and picked up four victories. The duo
took down the top doubles pairings from Millersville, Quincy, and
Bloomsburg in Hilton Head by 8-4 scores in all three matches.
Against Lenoir-Rhyne's Patrick Bauer and Mueller, they earned a
hard-fought 9-8 victory.
Winkelmann and the rest of the Pioneers will be back in action
on Friday afternoon when they travel to face SAC rival Wingate.
First serve against the Bulldogs is set for 2 p.m.
