Lukas Winkelmann repeats as SAC Player of the Year

ROCK HILL, S.C. --- For the second straight year, Tusculum College's Lukas Winkelmann has been named the South Atlantic Conference Player of the Year in men's tennis, after completing the 2014 regular season with a perfect 21-0 singles record.

Winkelmann and Nicolas Planchard were both named first-team All-SAC in singles, while Jonas Winkelmann was a second-team All-SAC honoree in singles. In doubles, the Winkelmann brothers were chosen to the league's first team. Voting was conducted by the conference's 12 head coaches and released by the league office on Tuesday morning.

Lukas Winkelmann did not lose a set in singles in his 11 conference matches, and in the process became the first Tusculum player to be a two-time SAC Player of the Year and just the second in league history to win back-to-back Player of the Year awards.

The junior from Boblingen, Germany has a 50-7 career singles record and has won 33 consecutive regular-season matches dating to the middle of last season. He is a three-time All-SAC performer and was the SAC Freshman of the Year in 2012.

Planchard repeated as a member of the All-SAC first team after compiling a 20-1 record at number-two singles for the Pioneers. The sophomore from Frisange, Belgium went 10-1 in conference play and lost just three sets in 21 matches the entire season.

The 2013 SAC Freshman of the Year has a 36-2 record in two seasons with the Pioneers, and is 21-1 all-time against SAC opponents (regular and postseason).

Jonas Winkelmann closed out the regular season with an 18-3 record for the Pioneers at number-three singles. The sophomore from Boblingen, Germany had a 9-2 record in conference matches and was particularly strong in third-set tiebreakers, going 4-0.

A first-team All-SAC pick as a freshman, Winkelmann has a 32-7 record in two seasons at Tusculum including a 17-3 mark in regular-season conference contests.

In doubles, the Winkelmann brothers went 18-1 overall and 10-1 in conference matches, finishing the season with a streak of 13 straight victories. Their only loss came in a tiebreaker, and they held their opponents to three games or less in 13 of their 18 wins. Since being teamed near the end of last season, the Winkelmanns have a doubles record of 21-2.

Joining Lukas Winkelmann as major award winners were Anderson's Juan Carracedo, who was named Freshman of the Year, and Michael Cabana of Wingate who was recognized as Coach of the Year.

The Pioneers finished with a 17-4 overall record and in second place in the SAC with a 9-2 league mark. Tusculum will play either Coker or Newberry on Thursday at 1 p.m. in the Food Lion SAC Tournament semifinals at the Rock Hill Tennis Center.
