Tusculum beats Catawba 7-2 for seventh straight victory

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Jonas Winkelmann rallied from a set down to win at No. 3 singles to claim the match-clinching point in Tusculum's 7-2 victory over Catawba Saturday afternoon at the Nichols Tennis Complex.

The Pioneers (10-3, 3-1 SAC) claim their seventh consecutive victory as TC captured two of the three doubles points and won five singles matches to claim the win over the Catawba Indians (7-12, 1-5 SAC).

Jonas and Lukas Winklemann opened doubles play with an 8-4 pro set win over the Catawba duo of Pierce Hoover and Jack Mordey at the top flight. The Tusculum pairing of Nicolas Planchard and Leon Seiz won 8-2 over Iago Montero and Aaron Vanhorenbeck at No. 3 doubles.

Catawba salvaged a point at No. 2 doubles when Matthew Nicholson and Michael Patch won 8-1 over John Taylor and David Siegle.

Lukas Winklemann and Planchard won at No. 1 and No. 2 singles by identical scores of 6-2, 6-2 to give Tusculum a 4-1 advantage.

Mordey claimed a 6-2 win in the opening set with Jonas Winklemann at No. 3 singles. But Jonas Winkelmann fought back to win the second frame 6-4 to send the contest to a third set. The two went back and forth before Mordey led 6-5. But Jonas Winkkelmann tied the set and won in a tiebreaker 7-6 to clinch the deciding point for the Pioneers.

Seiz won in straight sets over Vanhorenbeck, 6-1, 6-1 at No. 6 singles. Siegle claimed a three-set win over Patch at the fourth flight, 6-2, 1-6, (10-8) to round out the Tusculum scoring.

The Pioneers return to action next Saturday when they travel to South Atlantic Conference newcomer Coker for a 2 p.m. match in Hartsville, S.C.
