Wingate rallies for 5-4 win in SAC Tournament semifinals

Wingate University overcame a 3-1 deficit to defeat Tusculum College 5-4 in the semifinals of the 2013 Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Men's Tennis Tournament, played Friday morning at the Rock Hill Tennis Center.

The 42nd-ranked Bulldogs (16-10) avenged a 5-4 loss to the Pioneers (15-5) during the regular season and advanced to Saturday's championship match against Lincoln Memorial. Tusculum saw its 12-match winning streak come to an end with the loss.

Tusculum took a 2-1 lead in doubles play, winning the final two matches after Wingate picked up the first point of the match behind a win from Ryan Forbes and Kennedy Cancelado at flight two.

At flight three, Paul Wiederspahn and Joseph Elphingstone leveled the match with an 8-6 win over Josh Eardley and Sebastian Hall. The Pioneers took the lead at flight one, where Lukas Winkelmann and Jonas Winkelmann defeated Neal Towlson and Roberto Hennis 9-7.

In singles play, the Pioneers moved ahead 3-1 when Nicolas Planchard posted a 6-1, 6-1 win at flight two over Towlson. Hall picked up a point for the Bulldogs with a 6-4, 6-0 win over Jonas Winkelmann at flight three, and Forbes evened the score at 3-3 as he defeated John Taylor 6-2, 6-3 at flight five.

Cancelado gave the Bulldogs a 4-3 lead with a 6-4, 6-2 victory over Lukas Winkelmann at flight one, snapping a 12-match winning streak for the SAC Player of the Year. Wiederspahn brought the Pioneers back into a tie at 4-4 with a 6-2, 7-6 win over Hennis at flight four, but Eardley clinched the match for Wingate with a 6-2, 6-0 win at flight six over Daniel Gianopulos.
