Tusculum sweeps SAC postseason awards

Tusculum sweeps SAC postseason awards
ROCK HILL, S.C. ---

Tusculum College swept the major awards as the South Atlantic Conference unveiled its men's tennis All-Conference teams on Wednesday morning. Voting was conducted by the conference's 10 head coaches.

Sophomore Lukas Winkelmann was honored as Player of the Year, Nicolas Planchard was recognized as Freshman of the Year and Tommy Arnett was saluted by his peers as the Coach of the Year after the Pioneers finished 8-1 in league play and earned a share of the SAC championship.

Arnett was named SAC Coach of the Year for the fourth time after guiding the Pioneers to a SAC championship for the first time since 2008 with a revamped lineup that featured four new starters in singles, including three freshmen. Arnett, who was previously named Coach of the Year in Tusculum's three previous championship seasons of 2002, 2005 and 2008, has compiled a 166-83 record in 12 seasons with the Pioneer men.

Winkelmann and Planchard each earned first-team All-Conference honors in both singles and doubles, and were joined on the first team in singles by freshman Jonas Winkelmann. The Pioneers led all SAC schools with four first-team honorees between singles and doubles.

Tusculum is the eighth school to sweep the awards since the conference began sponsoring men's tennis in 2000. Combined with Lukas Winkelmann earning the SAC Scholar-Athlete Award, Tusculum joins Presbyterian in 2001 as the only schools to claim all four regular-season awards in the same year.

Lukas Winkelmann has compiled a 17-1 singles record for the Pioneers this season, playing exclusively at flight one, and joins Carlos Garcia (2008) as winners of SAC Player of the Year. The Boeblingen, Germany native is a perfect 9-0 in conference matches, winning eight of the nine in straight sets. Overall, 15 of Winkelmann's 17 wins have come in straight sets, and he will carry a 12-match winning streak into Food Lion SAC Tournament action. Winkelmann was a second-team All-SAC pick last year and won conference Rookie of the Year honors.

Planchard is the fourth Pioneer to capture Freshman of the Year honors, joining Lukas Winkelmann last season, Sergio Espinosa in 2005 and Roberto Robles in 2002. The Frisange, Luxembourg native also went 9-0 in conference matches and is 15-1 at flight two singles since joining the team for the spring portion of its schedule. Seven of Planchard's nine league wins came in straight sets, while his other two victories came in tiebreakers against Wingate and Newberry to help the Pioneers to a pair of 5-4 victories.

Jonas Winkelmann played at flight three for the Pioneers as a freshman and has compiled a 14-3 overall record and an 8-1 mark in league play. He has posted an 11-3 mark at his number-three slot in the lineup, including nine consecutive victories to close out the regular season. Winkelmann went 3-1 in tiebreakers during the season, including conference victories over Catawba and Lenoir-Rhyne.

The doubles team of Lukas Winkelmann and Planchard went 9-5 at flight one for the Pioneers, including a 5-3 record against conference opponents. The pair suffered two of their five losses in a tiebreaker, but recorded five of their nine victories by losing zero or one games to their opponents.

Tusculum is the second seed in this week's Food Lion South Atlantic Conference Tournament and will play either third-seeded Wingate or sixth-seeded Mars Hill in a semifinal match on Friday at 9 a.m. at the Rock Hill Tennis Center.
