Pioneers beat Brevard, win 10th straight match

Tusculum College lost just nine games across five singles matches on its way to an 8-1 win over Brevard College in South Atlantic Conference men's tennis action at the Nichols Tennis Complex on Tuesday afternoon.

The Pioneers (13-4, 7-1 SAC) won their 10th consecutive match and set up a showdown with Lincoln Memorial University on Friday for a share of the SAC championship. Tusculum would earn a share of the conference title with Anderson (8-1 SAC) with a victory over the Railsplitters, while LMU (6-1 SAC) can earn a share of the crown with wins over the Pioneers and Mars Hill.

Competing against a five-player lineup from the Tornados (2-15, 0-7 SAC), the Pioneers carried a 2-1 lead out of doubles as Jonas Winkelmann and John Taylor defeated George Finch and Stefano Giovanolli 8-3 at flight two, coupled with a forfeit win at flight three.

In singles, Jonas Winkelmann blanked Giovanolli 6-0, 6-0 at flight three, Nicolas Planchard defeated David Taggart 6-1, 6-0 at flight two and Lukas Winkelmann earned the decisive point with a 6-0, 6-4 victory at flight one over Johnannes Kloster.

For Lukas Winkelmann, it was his 10th straight victory and boosted his season record to 15-1, while Planchard improved to 13-1 overall with his win. Both players are 8-0 in conference matches this season.

The Pioneers finished off the victory as Taylor defeated Richie Liell 6-1, 6-0 at flight five and Paul Wiederspahn bested Finch 6-2, 6-1 at flight four. Wiederspahn won for the seventh time in eight conference matches and saw his season record climb to 11-3.

Friday's match against Lincoln Memorial will begin at 2 p.m. from the Nichols Tennis Complex.
