The Tusculum College men's tennis team opened its Spring Break
Bash trip with a 9-0 victory over Georgetown (Ky.) College on
Monday afternoon.
The Pioneers (4-4) did not drop a set in singles on their way to
the victory over the Tigers (2-3), who are ranked 23rd in the NAIA
Coaches' Top 25 poll.
Tusculum jumped to a 3-0 lead over Georgetown with three wins in
singles play. Lukas Winkelmann and Nicolas Planchard defeated Ryan
Least and Jacob Loveland 8-1 at flight one, Jonas Winkelmann and
John Taylor teamed for an 8-6 victory at flight two over Gustavo
Echeverria and Chris Bartlett, and the duo of Paul Wiederspahn and
Joseph Elphingstone claimed an 8-5 triumph over Zach Thomas and
Ross Phelps at flight three.
The Pioneers finished off the shutout of the Tigers with a sweep of
all six singles matches. Lukas Winkelmann defeated Echeverria 6-3,
6-1 at flight one, Planchard downed Least 6-0, 6-0 at flight two
and Jonas Winkelmann handed Thoma a 6-1, 6-1 setback at flight
three.
In other singles matches, Wiederspahn posted a 6-3, 7-5 victory
over Bartlett at flight four, Daniel Gianopulos won 6-3, 6-3 at
flight five over Loveland and Nacho Collado earned a 6-3, 6-1 win
at flight six against Josh Clay.
Tusculum returns to the courts Tuesday morning at 8 a.m. against
Charleston (W. Va.).
