Newberry comes back for 5-4 win over Pioneers

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Newberry College won a pair of three-set singles matches to overcome a 4-3 deficit and defeat Tusculum College 5-4 in South Atlantic Conference men's tennis action Sunday afternoon at the Nichols Tennis Complex.

Tusculum fell to 6-12 overall and 2-7 in the SAC with the loss, but four of the Pioneers' seven conference defeats have come by 5-4 scores. The Wolves improved to 4-13 overall and 3-5 in the SAC with the win.

The Pioneers opened the match by winning two of three doubles pro sets. Drew Kiser and Sam Groeneveld defeated Jeffery Kiser and James Bethea 8-5 at flight three, and Tony Bujana and Steven Lin came back from a 7-4 deficit to pull out a 9-8 win at flight two. Newberry got on the board via an 8-1 win by Vinicius Botelho and David Sons at flight one over Luis Zamora and Gui Carvalho.

In singles play, Newberry went ahead 3-2 as Saunders defeated Bujana 6-1, 6-1 at flight one and Botelho downed Zamora 6-2, 6-3 at flight two. The Pioneers regained the lead at 4-3 as Drew Kiser won 6-2, 6-1 at flight five over Jeffery Kiser and Groeneveld defeated Sons 6-3, 6-4 at flight six.

However, the Wolves knotted the score when Chakir held on for a 6-4, 6-7, 6-1 win over Lin at flight three, and closed out the match as Michael Woolard rallied for a 1-6, 7-6, 7-5 triumph over Carvalho at flight four.

The Pioneers close the 2010-11 season on Saturday at 2:30 p.m., hosting North Georgia at the Nichols Tennis Complex.
