Pioneers break 3-3 tie, defeat King 5-4

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Tusculum College broke a 3-3 tie with two singles victories and came away with a 5-4 victory over King College in non-conference men's tennis action Friday afternoon at the Nichols Tennis Complex.

The Pioneers (3-2) earned the decisive points at flight four, where Steven Lin defeated Patrick Jones 6-3, 6-0, and at flight five as Gui Carvalho edged Seth Hale 6-0, 7-6 to clinch the victory. Earlier, Luis Zamora outlasted Oriol Mirallas 15-13 in a tiebreaker at flight three after splitting the first two sets 7-6, 4-6.

In doubles play, Lin and Oliver Smith posted a 9-7 victory over Mirallas and Pablo Vidal at flight two, and Carvalho and Drew Kiser teamed for a 9-7 win at flight three over Hale and Eirkur Magnusson.

The Tornado (7-3) claimed singles wins from Rodrigo Avila at flight one by a 6-0, 6-1 score over Smith, at flight two by Vidal over Tony Bujana (7-6, 4-6, 10-4) and at flight six as Magnusson defeated Sam Groeneveld 6-1, 6-4. Avila and Jones also earned a doubles point by winning 8-5 over Bujana and Zamora.

The Pioneers return to action Saturday against 14th-ranked Francis Marion, with the match slated to begin at 11 a.m. at the Nichols Tennis Complex.
