Pioneers down Milligan 8-1 to earn first spring win

MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. --- Tusculum College picked up five straight-set wins in singles and cruised to an 8-1 win at Milligan College in a non-conference men's tennis match Saturday afternoon. The Pioneers evened their overall record at 2-2 while the Buffaloes fell to 1-3.

The Pioneers opened the match with three doubles victories, as Luis Zamora and Tony Bujana teamed for an 8-3 win over Johannes Jonsson and Ricky Jones at flight one, Steven Lin and Oliver Smith downed Wesley Rice and Matt Clark 8-0 at flight two, and Gui Carvalho partnered with Drew Kiser for an 8-2 win at flight three over Caleb Friddell and Mickey Brown.

In singles play, Smith posted a 6-4, 6-2 win over Jonsson at flight one, Bujana defeated Rice 6-1, 6-1 at flight three, Lin got past Clark 6-2, 6-1 at flight four, Carvalho downed Friddell 6-3, 7-5 at flight five, and Sam Groeneveld picked up a 6-2, 6-1 win over Brown at flight six.

The Buffaloes' lone win came at flight two, where Jones and Zamora played a 10-point tiebreaker after splitting the first two sets by identical 6-3 scores. Jones prevailed 10-8 in the tiebreaker to earn Milligan's point.

The Pioneers return to the courts on Friday afternoon at 1 p.m. against King College at the Nichols Complex.
