Pioneers edge Brevard, 5-4 in SAC Men's tennis

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Steven Lin clinched the deciding point as the Tusculum College men's tennis team captured a hard-fought 5-4 South Atlantic Conference win over visiting Brevard College Saturday afternoon at the Nichols Tennis Complex.

The Pioneers (12-2, 4-1 SAC) post their third straight victory and have won six of their last seven contests.

Lin accounted for two points on the afternoon, including an 8-3 pro set victory at No. 2 doubles with teammate Oliver Smith as they knocked off Cole Altizer and Jarred Fisher.

The No. 1 pairing of Henrique Rodrigues and Luis Zamora accounted for Tusculum's second point with an 8-4 triumph against the Brevard pairing of Scott McCormick and Dorian Feron.

The Tornados (4-7, 1-2 SAC) won a point at the third doubles flight as Andrew Thompson and Jonathan Kuhn defeated Gui Carvalho and Drew Kiser, 8-2.

BC tied the match at 2-2 following McCormick's 6-2, 6-2 win over Rodrigues at No. 1 singles. TC answered with three straight points as Zamora won his match 6-2, 7-6 over Altizer at No. 2 singles. Smith outlasted Thompson in a three-set marathon, 6-4, 1-6, 6-4 at the third flight.

Lin clinched the match with his 6-3, 6-3 win at No. 4 singles against Fisher. Feron and Shane Apps won their singles matches at the fifth and sixth flights, respectively to round out the scoring.

Tusculum's match at Newberry College has been postponed due to the threat of inclement weather and has been rescheduled for April 10 at 2 p.m. The Pioneers host Mars Hill College on Tuesday for a 2 p.m. match at the Nichols Tennis Complex. It will be a rematch of last year's championship match of the Food Lion SAC Tournament.
