Catawba shuts down Pioneers, 4-0

GREENEVILLE, Tenn. --- Catawba College defeated Tusculum University 4-0 in South Atlantic Conference men's soccer action Saturday afternoon at a rainy Pioneer Field.

Tom Savigar and Joseph Allerton each had a goal and two assists, and Nico Morillo and Simone Trentin had a goal and an assist for the Indians (8-6-2, 4-5-1 SAC), who scored twice in each half and outshot the Pioneers (1-10-2, 0-8-2 SAC) by a 16-9 margin.

Allerton and Savigar scored in the first half for Catawba, with goals by Morillo and Trentin in the second half after the Pioneers were forced to play a man down due to ejection. Gianluca Tommasi had four saves in the win for Catawba, while Tusculum keeper Nicolas Leite made four saves in his first career start.

Tusculum started quickly as Ignacio Alconchel blasted a shot to the low right of Tommasi that the keeper saved just 59 seconds into the match. At the other end, the Indians went up 1-0 as a cross from Savigar went to Allerton and he beat Leite to the far side for his second goal of the season.

Allerton nearly got his second of the match in the sixth minute as he split a pair of defenders, but shot just wide of the post. Tusculum almost tied the match in the 14th minute as a header by Alconchel off a corner kick from Michele Di Miele was played off the line by Catawba's Gage Bernard. Tommasi would stop Alconchel on a run down the left side less than a minute later, and follow up with a save on Pedro Concheso in the 16th minute.

Catawba would stretch its lead to 2-0 at 26:23 as a free kick by Trentin went off the head of Morillo in the box to an open Savigar, who deposited his seventh goal of the season. Leite would come back and make saves on a one-timer by Allerton in the 33rd minute and on a failed chip attempt by Savigar in the 44th minute.

In the second half, Trentin had a wide-open chance to extend the Catawba lead as Leite came outside the box to attempt to make a play, but his shot from long range rang square off the crossbar in the 50th minute. Alconchel put a shot on target from 20 yards that was saved by Tommasi in the 52nd minute, then he headed a cross high in the 57th minute.

Catawba gained the advantage in the 62nd minute as Tusculum had to finish the match a man down due to a red card. Allerton had a one-on-one chance with Leite in the 71st minute, but his low shot was stopped.

Morillo stretched the Indians' lead to 3-0 at 74:39 as a pass from Savigar was played along by Allerton, and Morillo finished for his sixth goal of the season. Trentin would close the scoring just under three minutes later as he gathered a through ball from Allerton and picked up his sixth goal of the year.

Tusculum finished the match with a 6-2 edge in corner kicks, while Catawba was called for 18 fouls to 10 by the Pioneers.

The Pioneers will close their regular season on Wednesday, Nov. 3 at Pioneer Field against Queens, beginning at 7:30 p.m. The Royals are tied for fourth place in the SAC standings with Anderson at 5-3-2 after beating Coker 2-0 on Saturday.
